"A recent report by the Department of Homeland Security's inspector general estimated that there were 630,000 foreign nationals in U.S. jails, but only 79,000—or 12.5 percent—were deported in 2005. Although the numbers have since improved, authorities lack the resources to keep up with all criminal aliens behind bars.

It's a problem some in Congress hope to fix. Both houses have measures to increase funding for the criminal alien program by 30.9 percent to $180 million. "There is simply no excuse for failing to identify every deportable alien," says Democratic Rep. David Price of North Carolina."

They should serve their sentences first, then be deported in all circumstances. I think anyone reasonable can agree with this.

I agree that ILLEGAL aliens, (undocumented) should be deported. If they have a criminal conviction, they are on a no-entry list for the rest of their life.

Try getting into some countries, ie Canada, Japan, Mexico, illegally and see how fast you wind up in prison, and then back across the border being told DO NOT COME BACK.

Why in the hell don't we just tattoo a target on their forehead then deport them. If someone with that target reappears in the US then any citizen could shoot on sight legally without any consequences. I think this would seriously reduce repeat offenders among illegal aliens at least.
As a taxpayer i resent the cruel and unusual punishment I receive every year paying for these criminals to live better than my in-laws do.

Since there here there criminals>If there working there criminals> Using some 1 stolen ID>there a criminal>They should go to jail for all offenses then deported>First time > Second time life in prison>Then they will get the idea not to come here illegally>

How bout "once illegal", bye bye now. And why is there an appeals process that is clogging up the federal immigration court? I mean if you are here illegally, what are you appealing?? Get OUT! If they have a criminal background, then they should be held in jail, other than that, it's back over the border for you, nacho! How about branding them, like they did with pirates? Then if you are caught again, it's the gallows for you. Works for me.

once illegal is enough. If you are not here legally, then you don't belong here. I don't have a problem with immigrants who go through the process of coming here with documentation to go to school and make a better life for themselves while abiding by our laws and culture, but I have a HUGE problem with all the ones that are coming over here by the dozen just to work low end jobs and commit crimes. It's ridiculous. I say no papers and first offense crime (of whatever caliber!), back to whence you came!!!

This sickens me. We don't have the money to deport illegals who perform a crime, so we let them stay to wait for them to do another and spend even more money on imprisoning them.

Yes, and the backgrounds of all illegal aliens should be investigated. If they have broken any law, deport, following incarceration.

Of course, most people I know agree as well. Just the start of making this a better place.

Yeah all illegal immigrants should be deported after serving their prison sentence.
