Then that gets back to the "legal/illegal immigrant" discussion. If they are here legally, then they must have tried to take a citizenship test by now. That test is given ONLY in english. I give the Polish (me too) great kudos for making their children have to learn English.
I firmly believe that if you come to another country then YOU MUST ASSIMILATE YOURSELF.
Our government, and people, owe nothing to you if you are not here legally and not part of the system. Part of the responsibility of coming here is to learn the language. Why do you think so many other countries teach English as a MANDATORY subject?

Actually Spanish has been on the curriculum of most U.S. schools for some time. Bi-ligual classes were begun in the sixties to help teach a new language to immigrants and were very successful. Around 1980, the bi-lingual classes were scrapped as being "too expensive". NCLB brought bi-lingual education back into the schools as a means, a proven means of raising English proficiency among the immigrant population. Certain populations are more vocal in their desire to have their children learn Emglish the "hard" way. These populations are usually immigrants from nations that have strong English curricla in their schools.

You do realize that public schools being forces to offer ESL classes, that's English as a second language, is what is bankrupting some school boards? Why can't they learn the language before coming to this country, and if you cant speak English, your not allowed in!! 100 years ago no public school offered special classes for students of immigrant parents, they learned the language or they didn't go to school. I think it's high time we stopped coddling these people. Either learn to speak English or get the hell out!!!!

A school in this area cut French and German classes, to fund ESL and remedial classes for the children of illegal aliens (Spanish-speaking). They also reduced their Gifted and Talented program for the same reason. They cut back to basics to fund ESL/remedial classes, taking away an academic edge for American kids. That is wrong.
We have legal immigrants from Asia and Africa here. They all have learned English and push their kids to achieve academically. None of those children are taking ESL. Several fly American flags in their yards. That is what this nation needs, and not those who demand to be accommodated.

Most schools have languages as electives, which I think is great. It broadens horizons, and helps them out in the big, bad world. There is nothing wrong with learning other languages.
However, if regular subject matter (history, match, science) are being taught in another tongue, then I have issue with it.
English is our de facto language, but until there is a law or Constitutional Amendment declaring it as the official language, these situations will persist. I'm very proud of anyone who tries to assimilate - my hats off to them!!!

I agree with you 100%. Part of being American is fitting in with our language and culture. Otherwise, go home.
Of course people should be proud of their ethnic heritage. Learning English doesn't mean you can't speak Spanish at home. And learning English will help you graduate from school, get a good job, and make day to day interactions with people (the store, the bank, even the DMV) so much easier!

Well as an immigrant myself who came here as a small child I feel that it's better to put children in English only classes so that they can learn it as soon as possible. They won't forget Spanish if their parents speak it with them at home.

Well if that's true, how come the don't teach Apache, Ute, Comanche, Hopi, Pawnee, Navajo, Lakota, Chiricahua, Cheyenne, Paiute, Seminole, Kiowa, Pueblo, Shawnee, Shoshone, or Gaelic?

There must be no Mexicans in your area.
I am one who vehemently disapprove of teaching a foreign language to accomodate new immigrants, legal or illegal. They all should be given intensive instructions in English, instead. Look at what Germany does to its new immigrants.

You don't know that they don't try. . .the fact that certain people pick up the language faster than others is a huge factor. Stop the hate . . .
