No one is going to care if you take 400 pounds worth of Yuan into China.
The Chinese banks in China will take 1% fee for exchanging your money so compare that with the fees at the UK banks. However keep in mind that the lines at some of the Chinese banks are pretty long, most banks have at least a 10 min wait time.
This is all the information you need to know. You presented a simple question and this is the simplest answer.
Some of the other advice above is just straight up confusing and I have no idea why some of it was even suggested.
On another note:
Be careful in Shanghai. There are a lot of bad people and scam artists here in China.
Remember that there is no such thing as tipping in China, and if anyone asks for a tip they are trying to scam you.

You can take Chinese Yuan into China, say less and 10,000 yuan is OK. There was currency restriction but uplift long time ago.
I would recommend that, if you can exchange some Yuan in your home country, change half of the money you plan to spend into yuan. And when you arrive China, change it in the bank from English pound into Yuan. Do it in hotel or better still do it in a bank. You may think that small shops near hotel may offer better rate, but you cannot distinguish a real yuan note from a fake one, so it is not advised to do that. Fake currency in China is very common.

These answerers are wrong. I just spent 5 weeks in Beijing and you're allowed to take up to 6000 Yuan with you (about 400 quid) legally. To be honest, no-one checks (even though there are forms to fill in). As well as cash, I took Travellers' Cheques (AmEx) but you can only change them at the Bank of China, which took me 40 minutes - 30 mins of waiting in a huge queue and then all of this paperwork. So I'd take cash and a credit/debit card - all of the cash machines accept all cards - even rubbish Solo! I'd also take some UK cash, the exchange rates in China can be really good at times (I was expecting 900 yuan from £50 and got nearly 1000!

You are not supposed to take Yuan in/out of China. Well... I remember there was a rule about this.
However, I did not really think anyone in China ever follows this rule if it is not a big amount of money. My friend in Hong Kong gives me a few hundreds Yuan in HK, and I bought them with me on my trip to China, exchanged 1000usd to yuan in China, and still have 2000 yuan when I left.
If it is only 400 pounds of yuan, it should be ok, but not a bad idea to bring it as pound and exchange to yuan in China from bank or 4/5 stars hotel.
(The funny thing about Yuan is having 100 yuan as largest bill. My 1000USD exchanged to 7800yuan.. it is a little too much for my wallet to have 78 paper bills. It's a thick stack of money.)

you can take cash in no problem
if I were you, wait to get here and exchange the pounds here, you will get a better deal
ATM cards can be used but you should inform your bank that you will be using it overseas, if you don't they may shut it down thinking it was stolen
Do not bring travellers checks, they are a pain to exchange
The pounds is really strong right now against the RMB so bring your pounds!
Use Bank of China

You are not allowed to take yuan into or out of China. You can change cash at the airport when you arrive. Keep your receipt because you will need it to change the money back when you leave.
