I just got a new PC with Vista installed. I have a bunch of files created in WordPerfect on my old PC, but when I try to open them on the new PC (with WordPad) they are unreadable, looking like gibberish. What can I do to read my old files on my new PC?

HELP!

I believe that it isn't possible to install WordPerfect on a machine running Vista, but I may be wrong.

OK, here's what I did. I opened the Wordperfect file on the old PC, copied the text and pasted it into Wordpad. Now I can open the file with Wordpad on the new PC and it looks "perfect". So I'll just do that to all my files.

Although, OpenOffice looks like a good idea.

Wordpad is not able to read Wordperfect files correctly. (Could not in XP either). You will need to either reinstall Word Perfect on the new PC, get a copy of MS Word instead, or install the free clone of Word, OpenOffice.

Any of those three are able to open Word Perfect files.

You will need to re install Wordperfect on that PC or use a full version of Microsoft Word to convert the files into something readable. You may be able to find an open source word processor to do the same, but I;m not sure which ones would do it.

Change the program that opens a type of file

If you double-click a file in Windows and it opens in the wrong software program, follow these steps to choose the program you would prefer that file use. You can change this setting for an individual file, or you can tell Windows to open all files of that same type in the software program you choose.

Open the folder that contains the file you want to change.

Right-click the file that you want to change, and then, depending on the type of file, either click Open With or point to Open With and then click Choose Default Program.

Click the program that you want to use to open this file.

Do one of the following:

If you want all files of that type to open in the same software program, select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.

If you want only that file to open in the software program this one time, clear the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.

good luck :)

you need to install word perfect, or an opensource office product. wordpad can only read .doc, .txt and .rft. word perfect uses a different file extension.
