I had this problem last winter (when I tend to use the heater the most!), and never addressed it. Now that winter is coming up, I figured I should probably have the problem fixed. Whenever I have the heater running in my 2003 Jeep Liberty, the blowing air is hot only when I'm accelerating. If I have the car in park, or if I am idling in traffic/stop light, etc., the air gets cold almost immediately. Now, I'm no expert, but I always thought heat was drawn from the engine, thereby making the air a little hotter when idling - not freezing cold. Could it be something simple like a fuse, or something that my somewhat-handy husband could fix? Or might it be a bigger problem that will require professional servicing? On the most frigid of Denver mornings last year when I was desperate to regain sensation in my hands and feet, I actually had to throw the car in neutral and gently push the accellerator when I was sitting in traffic - which I'm sure is not entirely healthy for the car.

Most likely cause is the car's thermostat is stuck in the open position.

Get the thermostat replaced.

It is something a handy husband can fix by himself, just make sure the thermostat get's replaced in the correct direction.

U have a vaccum leak going 2 the controls inside the vehicle - either a vacuum hose has come off or has collapsed on the intake manifold or one of the small hoses going through the firewall. OR the Vaccum canister [if it has one] has a leak in it . Probably also when u accelerate the air coming from the dash vents goes from the center vents to the floor.

Its probably your thermostat....its most likley stuck. You can check this sometimes by opening your hood and tapping on the thermostat housing with a hammer or something. This sometimes makes it open, it would be an easy way of checking it. They are really cheap and easy to fix.
**Like the first guy said, make sure you put the thermostat in right side up...and drain the antifreeze before you take it apart or you will spill all over.

you have air in your cooling system due to a coolant leak. if you look at the bottom you will see that it is low. most likely your water pump has a small leak from the weephole, you may see dried coolant on your hood insulation. find the leak and get your coolant full and bleed the air from the system with the bleed screw on the water outlet by the upper radiator hose, and you will have heat again.
