Give the vet a call and see what they suggest. Rats carry diseases!

You really do need to telephone and ask your vet.

1) The rat may have been poisoned, so watch out for your dog vomiting or passing blood or acting frightened or shaking. He would then need the antidote of vitimin K injections.

2) Rats carry leptospirosis and if your dog is bitten by a rat you need to get an anti -biotic injection for him by your vet quickly, even if he has been vaccinated against it, so I would imagine eating one may have the same affect.

Dont take the risk phone the vet and see. I hope he's alright.

Good Luck

I personally believe your dog will be just fine. HOWEVER when in doubt check with a specialist.
I was born and raised in Chicago in the early 30's where it seem to me rat's lived in the trash area back of all the apartments. When my mother told me to take the garbage out I ran like hell to get out of the stampede.
My best friend at the time had two mixed breed dogs that just loved to catch them for dinner or for an afternoon snack. They were healthy, fat and sassy.

Nothing. With my dogs, they often vomit it back up (yuck) or else it will just pass on through. Keep an eye out for any problems that might require a vet (such as abdominal pain or constant vomiting or attempting to vomit with no success) but otherwise things will work themselves out.

Why do we love these disgusting creatures so much? I have to wonder sometimes.

Nothing. Dogs are natural carnivores. If he was out in the "wild" what do you think he would eat to survive? Anything he could including rats, mice, snakes, etc...

the dog will do fine with the rat ingestion, but check him very well for bites or scratches in case the rat got a few licks in- could cause nasty infections....and don't let him kiss you until he brushes his teeth :)

Call your vet, since the rat may have been poisoned or carried disease.
