On the newest PS3 not all games will be playable from the ps2.
the original 60 gig version had a hardware emulator built in so it would basicaly be a ps2. Now with the newer PS3 they no longer use a hardware emulator it's all software. This makes it cheaper for sony. Though the consumer now cannot play all the games. much like the 360 most will work but a few will not until updates are made if at all.

Yes the PS3 was made to be backwards compatible, supposedly all the way to PS1.
BUT I've heard that newer versions of the counsel don't play everything, and you will still need your memory cards because the games won't pull game saves from the hard-drive.

PS2 games run better on US and Japanese versions due chip RSX. New versions don't have it - they run on software emulation. European versions didn't have that since the beginning. US 80 Gb and announced 40 Gb won't have it due to Sony's cost reduction plans.
