Im a human being, just like you. I have ups and downs, good days and bad, happiness and sadness.

I just have an easier time accepting the good and the bad as being consequences of MY actions, not the actions of an unseen sky God.

I'm not fully an atheist because I'm open to the idea of god if proof should ever arrive. But it hasn't thus far...

So, I'm agnostic for the moment but I don't practice any religion or pray. I must say it's a RELIEF to finally be agnostic after 20 some years as a Christian. It didn't anger me or scare me to figure out the Bible was a bunch of fairy tales... I was just RELIEVED. It was like a weight had been lifted off of my shoulders.

I really enjoy not living in fear every day!

Being an atheist is probably different for each of us. But for me, the move to atheism from theism (in my teens) was liberating. I face the world on what I perceive to be real terms, without any wishful thinking to cloud my thinking. That is not to say it isn;t hard. Life only has meaning that you put into it, and that is a struggle sometimes. I have grown up and learned to take the bad times and good, and to stare reality in the face.

It doesn't actually have a great deal of influence on how I live my life. Since it's simply the absence of theism I think about being an atheist as little as or perhaps even less than I think about religion.

It's not as though I have to think about anything I do in terms of being an atheist. I simply live my life without thinking about theism.

For instance I believe I have a pencil in my desk drawer. Does my belief that I have a pencil affect your life in any way? What is it like for you to have no belief that I have a pencil in my drawer?

Ever felt a sheep-like tendency to unquestioningly follow the perceived wisdom of the day?

Ever feared the ridicule which you could engender if you had a mind of your own?

Ever felt that you will appear extremely intelligent if you claim to be 'scientific'?

If you can answer yes to any of the above you will know what it is like to be an atheist.

From my point of view, it's like being responsible for your own actions.

Having lived as a believer and as an atheist, I would choose my current state over the other with out a question.

The decision I make will take me the road I am laying for myself, and all the mistakes that happen along the way will be mine with no one to blame but myself. I feel like I'm responsible for my own life. A heavy burden to bear, but well worth it.

Liberating.
I have no fear of death, because death is just the end.
I have no fear of divine punishment in this life, only the consequences of my own actions.
I am responsible for my life and the outcome.
I am not bound by childish fantasies or myths about the world.
And... I can sleep in on Sundays!
It is very liberating.

It's a lot like life.

Bills. Kids. Work. Eating, sleeping, living, breathing. PTA meetings. Movies from NetFlix. Giving to charities, doing volunteer work. Visiting friends. Stressing over daughter's hair, son's grades.

We get to sleep in on Sundays.
