They are safe.
The biggest problem that I have noticed is two-fold, and inter-related.
Automobiles do not repect something as large as a motorcycle, which is a vehicle in it's own right and subject to the same laws and has the same rights. Mopeds are similar, yet smaller. They are also restricted as to top speed. The operators are generally scared and do things unexpectedly. They are running the road scared due to the same lack of repect. They ride on the shoulder instead of in the proper lane, where they belong, just to save themselves because the cars will force them there.

They're safe enough ... it's usually not the vehicle that's the cause of accidents or injuries - but rather the operator & others not seeing 'em on the road and turning into them.

Yes, I've known a couple of folk who've had motorcycle, scooter and moped accidents. MOST of them are alright - because they were smart & wore helmets enough protection to keep them getting TOO injured.

On an "icy" road - I'd say it's just smarter NOT to ride a moped... they're a bit too light (and pull a lot of torque for their size) that they'll slip & slide a LOT in the ice. Not to mention how uncomfortable it will be for the rider.

For a start get back onto the 50 We all fall off at one time or another.Just like you've fallen off a skate board or a bicycle or probably a horse or even a swing..... None of them stopped you getting back on and so the experience shouldn't stop you now. You are right to feel apprehensive and wary but you are probably still suffering from delayed clinical shock. 1 if you are still suffering the symptoms of shock.....( look up clinical shock on internet) PLEASE PLEASE consult a physician. 2 If you have any injury seak medical advice. With regards to the bike the larger wheels of the motorbike increases the stability of the ride and will improve your dynamic balance You will feel more confident ... As to your question about safer..... neither is safe.... the rider is the safe thing.... think of a gun... it is lethal, its just the person holding it and either squeezing the trigger that makes it safe or dangerous

It depends on the skill and experience of the person driving it.
I know a family who let their 13-year-old daughter ride one. She promptly crashed into a tree and died. That was so sad. 13 years ago, and they still hang her stocking at Christmas.
I had a boyfriend many years ago who was hit by a car while riding a moped. He had a cast from toes to hip, that was a lot of fun for him.
Only an idiot, or someone with a death-wish, would ride a two-wheeled vehicle on ice!

I would also like to get a Moped, I have no car and its very difficult to get around, I like the bus sometimes, but the wait times can be long and sometimes you can't leave or you will miss the bus. If its a really hot day that is difficult and I have to bring water, but its still not fun. Although in my town people do tend to drive like they are drunk half of the time but think if I avoid the streets where they do this the most, I can do it. Plus I live in California and its mostly sunny all the time.
