Why do some of you get offended if you were to be called black (when a person is describing someone, I.E. the news) and yet we (white people) would be considered crazy if we said "Call us European Americans" rather than white? This is not a mean spirited question, just a question.

You haven't given any examples.

I assume it has to do with referring to someone's race when it's irrelevant.

After all, they don't specify white people's race every time they talk about a white person.

John Edwards isn't the "white" candidate. He's just a candidate.

Yep, (and I hope my answer doesn't offend some people), through the years we have been called everything possible, I think. In the 70's it was the Black Power.
Me personally I don't get offended. I'll be glad when we select a title and stick with it. African-American still, to me, doesn't fit the bill.

Colored - yep there's a bouquet of different shades in the community ranging from light to midnight black.

Here's something funny...I went to school with a set of twins....they were born in Africa, and moved here at a young age.....they are African-Americans...and they're white. (Parents are British). So what do we call someone that who was not born there? Just American? Or should I start saying I'm Scottish-American, since I was born here, but that's where the family came from?

I don't like the phrase 'African American' full stop. There are loads of other places black people can come from, not just Africa. People even use 'African American' here, and I live in England.

I'm not from Africa, Allah willed me to be born in northeast Ohio. I'm an Ohioan American not an African American.
My Ancestors are from Africa.
