Several times. There were 3 of us in the family, so United lost 6 bags. They did give us a new set of luggage though. Then 4 weeks later our original baggage showed up!

American lost my luggage once. A woman personally drove it 3 hours to my house 2 days later.

Northwestern lost my luggage once and were very snotty about it. I had to pay THEM to get it back.

I'd say each bag in every scenario was about $400. But at least they got returned at some point.

Delta lost mine once, SJU to ATL. It just did'nt come out at all. My husband was working ramp there for them at the time and so he had clearance to go to the baggage area and look for it. It had fallen off a belt in the luggage belt system thing they got at the bowels of the airport and would have been found soon enough but I was just lucky that he could track it down so fast for me.
Once from SJU to MCO also on Delta my luggage got caught on something and it tore really bad. They had collected all my items and neatly placed them into a large clear bag inside the torn luggage and then put a bag over the luggage as well. When it came out to the baggage claim area I took it to the bag claim folks and they replaced it with a new suitcase really fast. I still have that replacement suitcase, it's been awesome. I'm soo glad they dont give out crappy low quality ones.

I just keep clothes in my suitcases, I never put things I cant afford to lose in them. As much as I've flown in the past 10 years I'm astounded these are the only problems I've had with luggage on Delta.
On American Airlines once.. ugh, my luggage got tore up pretty bad and when I went to report the damage they basically told me to get lost. I was not happy about that...

Well, my luggage and I were reunited after several days, so the value never came into question.

What happened was, it was just after Christmas, I think 2004, and I was on a Delta flight from Columbia to Cincinnati and then LAX. We boarded the plane, but there was a mechanical problem. They fixed that and found a second problem. So they disembarked us while they fixed the plane. Problem was, by now I was going to miss my connecting flight.

So they took off the plane completely. I then flew to Atlanta, Las Vegas and finally LAX. My luggage made it to Atlanta, ended up on a non-stop to LAX, and then continued on to Hawaii. Finally it was found in Hawaii and return to me a few days later.

It is because of problems like this that anything of value goes in my carry-on with me.

Yes, TWA lost mine years ago because I was originally flying into JFK and flew into LaGuardia instead so they were able to trace it and delivered it to my home the following day.
