As soon as you have all your year end information together, and you have the tax forms available. More than likely you couldn't file any earlier than 1/1/08.

For electronically filing, the IRS is usually ready to go by January 15th.

You have to wait until the year is over, but then you can file any time.

While the answers that say January or when you receive your W-2 are technically correct, I wait until Feb., in case there is a 1099 coming that I am not expecting.

The IRS will start accepting returns sometime in January. You also have to wait until you have all of your paperwork like W-2s.
