Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.
Before being "saved," any sin will block a person from heaven. No one can be good enough to earn heaven.
After being "saved," God's santifying grace opens the gates of heaven for us.
Catholics do not believe in once saved, always saved and most "saved" Christians sin occassionally.
1 John 5:16-17 - If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly.
Catholics believe:
Mortal sin is a grave infraction of the law of God that destroys the divine life in the soul of the sinner (sanctifying grace), constituting a turn away from God. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be present: grave matter, full knowledge of the evil of the act, and full consent of the will.
Venial sin is a sin which does not destroy the divine life in the soul, as does mortal sin, though it diminishes and wounds it. Venial sin is the failure to observe necessary moderation, in lesser matters of the moral law, or in grave matters acting without full knowledge or complete consent.
But continual venial sin can slowly but surely totally separate you from God, placing you into the state of mortal sin.

St. John tells us, "If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly." (1 John 5:16-17). Thus St. John distinguishes between mortal and venial sin, mortal being "deadly sin" and venial being "sin that is not deadly."

Bearcubx is right. According to the Catholic Church, all sins are serious, but telling your sister that her jeans don't make her butt look fat is a great deal less serious than murder or theft.
Catholics believe that venial sins are less harmful to your soul than mortal sins -- but they are still serious. If you died with venial sins on your soul, as all people probably will, you will not be sent to hell. You will go to purgatory for a while before you enter heaven. If you die with a mortal sin on your soul, you will go to hell.

1 John 5:16:
1If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask and God will for him give life to those who commit sin not leading to death There is a sin leading to death; I do not say that he should make request for this.
Remember- they are talking about SPIRITUAL death here. It is clear that there are 2 types of sin, those that lead to death and those that do not.
Deadly and mortal mean the same thing. Venial means pardonable.
If there is sin that does not lead to death, that is venial sin. Sin that leads to death(even if spiritual) is mortal.

No. There are venial, and mortal sins. Venial sins are lesser and mortal sins are more serious. Cheating on a test might be a venial sin. Killing somebody is a mortal sin. All sin is serious but there are degrees of seriousness.

May I remind you, that the above observations are based on human manifestations of what are thought to be transgressions against God. However, the fact of the matter is, we as humans are incapable of predicting how God will judge us upon our death. It would be as though we were travel agents directing each other in their routes to the after life. Even when, we don't know where ultimately we're going.
