What is a .30 caliber? Is it one particular gun or is it any gun that has a 30 in the size such as 300 or 30-06?

The reason I ask is
Exceptions: Bobcat and coyote may be taken during day light hours with archery equipment, firearms no larger than .30 caliber or shotguns with shot no larger than T shot. Bobcat and coyote may be taken during daylight hours of any open deer, bear, spring turkey or spring squirrel season with hunting equipment legal for that season.

this is the Arkansas Game and Fish comission.
I want to hunt coyotes and was thinking of buying a .223. Is this saying my 30-30 is legal. Could I use a 30-06?

You are correct!.30 caliber be it 30-06 or 300 Win Mag are all 30 calibers. But why would you want something so big and expensive to shoot?I would suggest a .223 or .22-250 or something in that range.Just an opinion from an avid coyote hunter ;)

This is simple, bullet construction is more important than caliber, any 270,7mm, 30 cal or larger will do the job. just pick a good bonded core or a-frame constructed bullet, if you hand load this will be know problem, if you dont blackhills, federal and winchester make loads with these type bullets, pick a heavier bullet, 270 @ 140 grain and up, 7mm @ 160 grain and up, 30 cal @ 165 and up. Just remember the bigger the cartridge the more the recoil, you must practice shooting at realistic distences, in field positions. If you are looking for the latest and greatest fedral came out with the .325 federal (based off the 308 casing) also so the 325 wsm. As for rifles Remington, Winchester, Ruger, Savage all make quality rifles with Savage being the lowest price. Get a good scope, Leupold or Burris. And you cant go wrong. good luck and happy hunting

What they are saying is that during any of the deer, bear, spring turkey or spring squirrel season you may take bobcat and coyote with a rifle, shotgun, bow if it is legal to take deer, bear, spring turkey or squirrel during the time you are hunting bobcat and coyote. Colorado has a similar law that forbids anyone from hunting coyote with a LESS than .30 cal. rifle during the big game seasons. And the hunter must have a big game license on him. This law was passed to
(1)keep poachers from hunting deer with .223 (which are illegal in CO. for deer or any big game) or
(2)just hunting/poaching big game with only a small game license during big game season. That is confusing. Let me try again. We would get hunters walking around with .30 cal rifles and if they were stopped they would say "I am hunting coyotes" So we had to let them go. So the law now reads that they must use a .30 cal. or larger rifle for coyotes during big game season and have a big game license in their possession. Plus a small game license.
If you are still following me you are good. LOL

This means .30". there are two diameters in rifled guns, and the caliber may be either of them. The bullet and larger bore diameter is .308". Such calibers may be called .30, .300, .308, 7.62 or 7.63 mm. There is wide varaiation in the amount of powder in variuos cartridges. 7.63 mau is a pistol shell for the 1896 Mauser. The biggest ones are .300 or .308 Magnums, and there are many of them by now.

By all means use your 30-06, the first number is the calibre, the -06 in the denotation merely refers to the year of development, 1906. To answer part two, it is any gun who's calibre is .30. I would be hesitant to hunt with .223 except for very small game such as rabbits, where using anything larger would be wastefully gross overkill.

For the most part, a 30 cal rifle is any rifle that shoots a .308 bullet. There are some exceptions to this, but that only comes into play if you are reloading the shells.

You know, in general firearms nomenclature, .30 cal often applies to .03-06 and .308, however the actual bullet diameter is greater than .30 cal.

In dealing with law enforcement and game management, I have found it's better to call and ask them what their field staff considers .30 cal or not.

According to Arkansas Law, you could use any of the calibers you listed for Coyote, or Bobcat. I hunt in Arkansas myself using a 223 caliber for Coyote and Bobcats
