So here we have it, an attempt brough on by CWN to prohibit mockery of Jesus Christ.. As far as I can tell it was started today..

From the petition site:
"It's time for Christians to stand up and say, "Enough is Enough!" The name of Jesus Christ should not be mocked, nor should those who love Him be slandered for their beliefs. It is time for people of faith around the country to stand firm against religious slander, bias, and bigotry of all types including Christianity. "

So tell me Christians of this site, is America going the way of the middle east? Will you sign your country away to your religion?

How exactly will getting signatures stop people from mocking something? These are the same people who say the soldiers in Iraq are fighting for our freedoms (such as freedom of speech)? Seems logic and reasoning are not their strong points.
My head hurts now.

Maybe there needs to be a petition stating that Christians are not allowed to solicite non-Christians. I would sign a petition that states that non-Christians cannot be chastized for the lack of belief and Christians are not allowed to tell people they're going to hell under any circumstances because it mocks the lack of belief.

My question to these people is: When did you attain the right to do away with a person's right to free speech and expression?

I am not a Christian, but I do not mock their beliefs either. If I were a Christian, I would be more offended by the fact that musicians, rappers mostly, have lyrics that discuss abusing their mates, breaking the law and such. Those same people thank GOd when they win an award for their work. That is an ultimate mockery.

Has anyone heard of ANY good that has come from online petitions? This one will fail for the simple fact that we have a Constitution with a call for the separation of church and state. So if slandering god is considered a hate crime (just for example) then any time a preacher opens his mouth against any other gods then he could also be convicted of a hate crime in the name of The Flying Spaghetti Monster.

The US prides itself on separation of church and state, but it's obvious that that separation just isn't there. If something like that went through, there would be even less than there is now. But, it's a very religious country to begin with. I can't see it getting worse than it is - and 50,000 signatures isn't that much in a country with 300 million people.

Funny how this coincides with the growth of atheist groups.

(Out of curiosity, an acquaintance of mine started tracking the
membership stats in Atheist Meetups at meetup.com. With about two
months worth of numbers he thought he'd post some results. The
growth in the total number of members was declared to be a little
iffy, because the site deletes inactive members every so often, and
there was one mass deletion that happened ~7/16 - membership dropped
from 18,286 to 17,267.

6/27/2007 - 155 groups in 128 cities consisting of 17,915 total
members
8/25/2007 - 171 groups in 139 cities consisting of 18,667 total
members

Growth in number of groups: 10 %
Growth in number of cities: 8.6 %
Growth in total membership: 4.2 %

Pretty impressive growth rates in atheist / freethinker / humanist
groups over only two months. He suspected the actual growth in total
membership is much closer to the groups and cities rates but he
won't know until they do another mass deletion and he can "compare
apples to apples".)

This sort of intolerance is another example of the loonies working towards a religious war. They are loosing throughout the world by loosing members and are getting desperate.

I don't think so. We have every reason to "worry" about it! Yes, America is going the way of the middle east, most specifically the way of the papacy in the Middle Ages. That is why in the book of Revelation we are told that this "lamb like" power will soon "speak like a dragon". The time is coming when the religious element (Christian Right, Moral Majority) in the U.S. will wield the power of the state to enforce their "Christianity" and to punish all dissenters.

That is ridiculous. It's called Freedom of Speech and Freedom of religion. So..."Christians" can mock atheists or people of others religions, but no one is supposed to be able to mock them?? That is the most absurd thing I have ever heard.

I agree that we shouldn't mock Christ, but the biggest insult to the ideas of Christ is the way his followers behave. If Christians want to be respected, they first need to uphold the examples Christ set. Until they do that, they deserve to be mocked.
