I've been having a lot of mental health issues over the past year. It has ranged from mood swings, long periods of depression, ups and downs but the downs have been LOW--scraping the bottom feeling hopeless. I was on birth control (Alesse) and Lexapro (20 mg) for about 6 months. I felt out of control and nuts. I've decided (against medical opinion) to stop putting any drugs into my body and instead of seeking further medical attention--concentrating on my mind and spirit through meditation, music and working out.

I still plan to see a counselor on a bi-weekly basis.

Do you think that we can control our "mental" problems with natural help?

The interplay between inside-outside is really complex and made more so by the Western view of looking at things in an either-or fashion.
Brain chemistry could be fixed and affect moods and view. Chronic mood and view dispositions affect brain chemistry. It is all one ball of neurons and glands and digestion and history, and genetics and cetera.
If you want to try natural approach, the first thing to know is that there is no point in comparing yourself to anyone else. The second point is to focus on the now. we understand that the past influences the present, and the present influences the future, but now is what you have. This is a very conventional statement, yet how many people really live now.
How many of us are driven by memories of past events and/or future hopes and fears.
There are many avenues to living in the now. Some are better than others. It all depends on you personal taste.
I don't like authority structures and don't like monks or priests or pastors or preachers or gurus or swamis. That is why I chose to practice with sgi-usa. They are not perfect, but I can live with their smaller number of inconsistencies than other groups. It is important to have the support of a group that understands your difficulties.

Wow....

I can't really ANSWER this question, but I can give you my two cents.

I can identify with this question completely. I'm what I would consider a naturopath, always looking to natural options for life's ailments. I think as far as mental taxation goes, you have started many wonderful ways to combat it. Working out should be a top priority, because it creates endorphins that elevate your mood and keep you from the blues. Your diet is key too. Getting lots of omega 3 fatty acids and B vitamins can lift your mood. Mediation is also very beneficial. Talking to someone can help. Music can be a very powerful outlet. I would suggest journeling your feelings and see if there is a pattern (this is something I have been doing lately because i have those ups and downs you speak of...I have a feeling I am manic depressive). Find something that busts those blues...a creative outlet perhaps, besides journaling?

I think it is possible to control any issues we may have with our bodies naturally. What do you think people did before modern medicine?

Have you tried any natural supplements?

Seeing the counselor is good. Having assistance and coaching to identify and control the stressors, address guilt, and to stratagize to do your days more effectively, taking a look at your expectations, and relationships gives you insight as to why you do what you do. All these working together will assist you to smoothe out your life.

However, as far as the depression goes, it may or may not help. The source of your depression is the determinor. Is it merely emotional - mental - social?-- It may help you.
Or is it eminating from a physical source?
Physical reasons for a physical problem require a physical answer.

Mark your calendar and open your notebook to journal for the next 6 weeks. If you are not greatly improved in the next 6 weeks, whatever you are doing to treat it, then it may be time to go a different route for treating your depression.

Medications don't "cure" depression. They treat it.

I read a study a while back about a doctor who linked brain chemical imbalances with a B-12 deficiency. At that time I was battling with depression and decided to try a good B complex hoping it would help me. After about 2 weeks I noticed I wasn't depressed as often. After about a month I no longer had any signs of depression. Good luck!!!

Yes we can. You are on the right track. Along with working out, play some sport also. Join a sports club or something. Go out often and meet more people. Stay busy, take interest in activities that you like. You'll be just fine... you know whats right for you. Keep going the natural way. All the very best.

Depression, Tension & Increase of will-power.

Increasing the will-power : Our mind has a great effect on these glands. For example, continuous fear damages the Pituitary gland and makes one timid. Similarly, tension and worry disturb the Pineal gland and so leads to high B.P. and as Pineal gland controls other glands it also disturbs other glands and digestive system. In modern times, strees-tension or worry-fear have increased and they often disturb these endocrine glands. If these endocrine glands are not treated immediately, it might lead to malfunctioning of other glands of the body. As these glands are interrelated, whenever one gland is disturbed, the other glands also get disturbed. So, when you press on the points of these endocrine glands you will feel pain on points of more than one gland especially in case of chronic diseases. Therefore, it is very improtant to give Acupressure treatment on all the endocrine glands and keep them under proper control.

These glands also control the mind (the will-power). So in order to get rid of bad habits like smoking, drinking, drug addiction or even overeating, it is extremely necessary to give treatment on all endocrine glands for at least, fifteen days. Because, these people lack the necessary will-power to give up bad habits, they often break their vows to stop such bad habits and so they are considered unreliable. However, a treatment of fifteen days will give them necessary will-power to stop these bad habits after that. And they will be free from the withdrawal symptoms of stopping these bad habits.

Nervous tension : In the modern days because of fast life and loss of contentment, nervous tension keeps on building up increasingly, tending to damage our mind and health.

How to find out : Ask the patient to lie down on the back and ask some one to press on the base of the middle toe in both the legs. If there is a hurting sensation,it means nervous tension. If the hurting is unbearable, it means that the person is on the verge of collapse and needs immediate attention.

C U R E : (1) While the patient is lying on the back, bend all the toes of both legs, backward. It may hurt but give little more pressure and bend them as much as possible. Repeat this three times a day till the tension is removed.

(2) Clasp your hands tightly interlocking the fingers. Then with left hand fingers press on the back of the right hand and then with right hand fingers, press on the back of the left hand. repeat for about 1 to 2 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day.

(3) Insomnia : The above mentioned treatment can be taken for 5 to 12 minutes at night in bed to ensure good sleep and cure insomnia.

(4) Take 2 glasess of gold/silver/copper charged water reduced from 8 glasses of water daily.

(5) Kali Phos 1 m (a Biochemic medicine) : Take 8 pills in the eveining between 8 to 9 p.m. for 10 days, then once a week. After 10 days Kali Phos 12 x 4+4 pills every day. Complete course is of 45 days.
