I just found out that my application for a bank of ireland credit card has been refused. Im 19 and just got my first full time job so I decided it would be a good idea to get my first credit card, I only wanted it for doing online shopping on ebay etc. I've been with bank of ireland for 2 years and I have a regular sorce of income now, I still live at home so Im not paying any big bills. I cant understand why they wont give me one, they didnt even say why in the letter. All my friends have them, they are the same age and all at college, they dont even work! so why cant I get one?

The only way you'll know is to call them up and ask them. You also have the option of calling the credit reporting agency that they used and get a free copy of your credit report. That report might shed some light on exactly why your credit application was denied.

It could also be that you don't have ENOUGH credit so the bank didn't take a chance on you. Again, ask and research your credit report through the agency that the bank used.

You likely do not have enough credit exposure to qualify at this time. Remember, no credit = bad credit to a debtor, but no credit can become good credit in a matter of no time. Try getting a very low-limit card at a retailer or gas station first. That way, the qualifications are far lesser. Use the card for about 2 to 3 billing cycles. Charge a bit (not a lot!) and pay it off each and every month. Then, try again...

I can understand you frustration trying to establish credit can be a pain I am 21 and just beginning to establish credit. The reason you might have been denied is because of the type of credit card you applied for being that you haven’t established much credit you might want to apply for a secure credit card. Sometimes the bank will require a deposit but at least you will have a credit card and begin to establish credit that way next time you wont be denied. Also you might want to consider applying for a student credit card just because they say “student” doesn’t mean you have to be in school and that’s probably the type of card your friends have. If you try to apply for a credit card with a low interest rate you probably will be denied because you wouldn’t qualify.

First, you have to get over the fact that all your friends have a CC and not you.

Believe it or not, you're the better for it.

Second you have to thank someone that you can't get one...you are better off without it.

If you have a checking account, ask your bank about getting a Visa debit card. It is tied to your checking account and works like a Credit Card for online purchases, however there's one major benefit...no bill that's due the next month. The thing you have to understand is that if you don't have the cash, you don't make the purchase.

Credit cards aren't a social status point.

If you pay cash for everything you purchase, you'll not have the stress that comes with having the bills for your purchases roll in month after month.

The key here is discipline. If you can understand that, you'll be so far ahead of 98% of the others you'll meet in life.

Take this advice from someone who didn't know any of this or understand it either until I had over 40,000 in CC debt and was enjoying the stress that comes with instant gratification.

Your friends got a credit card because they are in college probably with student loans, so there credit is established....

This is most likely why you didn't get a credit card... your credit is not established... you've been working maybe less than a year.. and you don't have any bills that you must pay..

getting a credit card with an bank is hard anyways.. try going to chase(chase.com) or capitalone(capitalone.com)...

you dont need a credit card to do online shopping.. you can use a debit card(that is linked to your checking account)

just having a job does not establish credit. I moved out of my parents house when I was 20 and it took awhile to establish credit like paying utility bills, rent..those things will help. My first credit card only had a limit of $300.00 and then when they saw that I was paying things on time they raised the amount. Credit card companys are a sucker for college students. And usually by the time that student graduates besides being stuck with loans they have a large amount of credit card debt to pay back.

You don't have any established credit. Try opening a few department store credit cards. Use them a few times and pay them off right away. This will establish good credit and a bank will be more likely to give you a credit card.

because you have no credit some company's will not give you a credit card because of that. you may want to apply for a student credit card some company's have that or try with the bank you are with.

You need to establish your credit...Having no established credit is just as bad as having bad credity.

I would suggest trying Household bank (www.householdbank.com).

They basically give out starter credit cards for people like you...best of luck!
