How do you define immigrant?
The British Isles are the most invaded island in history. Basically everyone living here today can be described as an immigrant or having immigrant ancestors.
So if we were to kick all immigrants out what is the cut off date?
Having aid that I agree that there seems to be an awful lot coming in now. We should allow people to come only if they are going to work, if not they should not be allowed to come in. This can only be done from a current date and cannot be reptrospectivly applied for the reason above.
The UK should tighten it's immigration laws, in certain countries you can only get in if you have a job to go to or can support yourself without calling on the state.
A lot of countries can only offer a job to a foreigner if the employer can show that there is no resident equally qualified for the job.

Yes there are too many. 750k apparently in the last two years alone. These are govt. figures and even they admit it is probably much higher. Also that figure does not include those who enter illegally. My question is where did all the jobs suddenly appear from that these people got? Every single one of them found work did they? How did they find accommodation, many have no English. I believe that many share but that is still a helluva lot of houses required. Where did they come from? Our council housing waiting lists were already a mile long! Our kids are generally being taught in classes of 36 or more and parents are lucky to get the school of their choice. Where have all the extra places come from? I could go on but you get the picture.

how many's too many?
To redress the startling display of ignorance and xenophobia shown by others on this question I reckon it's a case of the more the merrier. As citizens of the UK we can pretty much go where we please, so I reckon it's only fair - in the true British fashion of fairplay and tolerance - that anyone should come here if they wish, regardless of the reasons they left their own country.

Don't get me started...
I think that immigrants should ONLY be allowed in if they can speak, read and write fluently in English. and cannot claim OUR benfits.
I have no problem with foreingers here but I do have a BIG problem with those who refuse to speak English in OUR country and claim ever benefit under the sun so they don't have to work. Pay their taxes, and I don't care.
But please, LEARN ENGLISH!!
I moved to Greece in 2000 and learnt to speak Greek. I didn't want to seem ignorant so I made the best effort I could and I can now speak and read Greek very well.

I must say that E.U. National immigrants do seem rather thick on the ground at the moment, it seems to me that people from all of the poorer countries are coming here rather than staying in Poland, Portugal, Lithuania, Estonia, southern Italy, parts of Spain etc. It seems that we are seen as a soft touch compared to France and Germany.

Not at all.
There are more illegal Americans (owing to them overstaying their visa) in the UK than any other nationalities. It's about time we highlighted this problem of illegal AMERICAN immigrants.

Spook542, you better to give up, mate, this chap does not want to know what you think, he wants to confirm he is right - only!
Yep, man of mistery, there are many of us and there will be much more, and we want to puke on the pavement, urinate at your front door and poo in your garden - exactly as your compatriots do, when they visit Prague, Cracow and Riga. Are you satisfied now, you fool?

I do, which is why I left and moved to Bulgaria, and I am one of the 2500 British people doing so every single week!
