Hi i have a question I have started to tithe, but i am confused... first f all when you tithe are you ONLy supposed to give the money to a church? i ask this because everytime i give to someone in need i deduct it form the tithing amount, is this a correct way to tithe?

My sister in law that is a christian tells me that I can only tithe to a church , that i can help other but it does not count as tithing, it only counts as a good deed.

Please enlighten me on this since i want to make sure i am tithing the correct way, are there scriptures that say that all tithing must ONLY go to churches? I am just not sure if I should just give all my tithing to church, and then give additional for good deeds because i wouldnt be able to afford it .

I would consider that part of your tithe.

As tithes are supposed to go to God, I'd say that he's the only one you have to answer to... and giving your tithes to...say... an abused women's shelter rather than a church... you are still giving to God's children right? Helping those in need. I think the main reason most people believe in only tithing to the church is because the church coffers go to paying the church's bills, the pastor's salary, and possibly (if there is anything left over afterwards) to help needy church members with utilty bills and such...

Tithing is an Old Testament law and doesn't apply to today's Christians. We are to give offerings and many give 10% or more, but tithes aren't "required." Those offerings can come in any form, too!

For instance, I make quilts for Project Linus. That is a work that is for the Lord and I consider it part of my offerings to Him.

God bless you!

Other churches have charities especially around Christmas, our church does a coat drive and helps those less fortune by buying a poor family their christmas, I would start with the food banks in town, they can tell you where to turn, maybe find out how to hook up into the marine toys for tots if you can't afford christmas for your kids. Some catholic churches even provide more then just what I have mentioned. You may look into welfare for food stamps. A pain I know but better then starving, I wa son churhc welfare and got allot of can goods. The canned pork and beef was not that good. All I can say is you better hurry up, because if they have to have a meeting about it and ask God, that ay take time and you don't have time right now.

Tithing is giving at least 10 percent of your paycheck to God/ the church. What you would be doing would be giving charity.I will talk to my pastor about it for some scriptures. You might want to email me In case I don't have time to get back on before you want your question answered.

Tithing is giving money to the church only. Who are you to decide what the church needs to do with that money!

If I were you I would stop giving to the church entirely. Why does God need money?

Go to:
http://www.charitywatch.org/ratingguide.html
or
http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm

and pick a top rated charity in an area you want to support and give them the money. They will produce much more effect for your dollars than any church will do.

God is going to judge your heart, that is sure, but I have heard it taught and I now beleive along this line. If some one needs help, they should go to the church, and let the pastor know, If you know someone needs help you should go to the pastor and let that pastor know, then the help would be coming from what was gave to the Lord, right now, you are the provider, they have no need for God, cause you have meet the need. Sometimes God may and does use money issues to get peoples attention, if that is what is taking place, you would be interfering right? But if the help comes from the church, then God will be the one getting the Glory. Hope this help

Save your money dear. The priest's next cadillac might come from your tithe. Now if you do that to register goodness as you would for taxes for the US Govt, it's like indulgences. Nothing will buy your ticket to heaven, it's like bribery. (if there was a heaven in the first place)
