I have tried to tell her over and over again, that the tanning bed will age her, she is 21, so she is an adult, she loves her tanned skin, but she won't believe me that in twenty years, she will have old, wrinkled skin...I am in my late fifty's with beautiful creamy, unwrinkled skin, she asumes hers will look like mine when she is old, but that will never happen, she lives in the tanning bed....I need something to tell her, that will make an inpression on her, because I am not getting through to her. Thanks for the help

First let me say overdoing anything is bad. People shouldn't lay out all day on the beach or sit in tanning beds all day, but sun is necessary for us.

Sun is necessary because it is the only way we get vitamin D. Vitamin D is crucial to calcium absorption. If you don't get enough your bones will become weak and brittle and you're chances of getting osteoperosis earlier than normal increases dramatically.

Tanning beds are a bad way to get your daily sunlight. They provide a mimic of natural sunlight, but worse rays. Encourage your daughter to get her sunlight, but in a natural way, and less frequently.

Your daughter may also be addicted to tanning. It has been proven that certain rays in sunlight give people a "happy high". It might be tough to get her away from this "high" and she might be prone to depression or sadness without her daily dose of sunshine.

I'm not sure what nationality you are, but certain ethnic groups are more prone to sun damage than others. I personally can lay out without any protection for long periods of time without fear of a burn because of my ethniticiy. I've also checked my skin damage, and I have virtually nothing.

If you want to scare you daughter and show her right now how damaged her skin is, take her into a sephora store, or invest in two blacklights. If you set up two blacklights in front of a mirror in a room of total blackness, you'll be able to clearly see the skin damage on your skin. You'll see hundreds or thousands of spots all over your face if it's severely damaged.
These spots will show up more as you get older.

As far as sunscreen goes:

The companies that make sunscreen are big hypocrites only looking to make money. They give a portion of their profits to the cancer funds, and in turn the cancer funds run ads saying to put spf on to protect yourself from skin cancer.

Why are they hypocrites, well if you look up the ingredients in spf they have cancer causing agents. If the Cancer organizations actually cared they would say to protect skin with clothing, not chemical laden spf.

How to naturally protect yourself:

You can naturally protect your skin without man made chemicals and toxins. The first is with clothing, the second plants. Certain plants have their own internal sunscreen and by taking the plants chemical, you can have a natural barrier to the sun. I believe this chemical is called chlorella, but don't quote me on that. Eating a good amount of fruits and veggies also helps to protect and help your skin rejuvinate after being in the sun.

Im a skin care therapist and in school they showed us a demo of a turkey getting cooked in the oven, it is the same thing it has the same effect on your skin as the turkey, your skin actually has layers of dead skin build-up. So at thanksgiving dinner show her before and after. Look for skin on her face that is turning black and point it out to her, it happens over time and that is not sexy. If she refuses give her a nice body exfoliator for x-mas to help keep her skin from looking burnt, and remind her that movie stars spray tan and would not chance having wrinkled skin when they are older.

Spend some time on a Rhode Island Beach with sun worshippers ugh. Also suggest that she tries mystic (spray) tanning instead. That way she have a beautiful glow without the cancerous lights.

My sister is the same...she wont stop no matter what she just cares about looking tan now...not what she will look like in 10-20 years...and im just like you i am pale as a ghost i think ive only gotten like 2-3 sunburns in my life as a child when i was to young to know better...i never plan on tanning...but some people just don't care...you could show her pictures of people who tanned their whole life..and people who didn't...if that doesn't i don't think anything will...cos being tan is popular and she is going to do what she thinks makes her look hot...good luck tho

Tell her to watch "There's Something About Mary" and see the old lady with the wrinkle tatas as a cautionary tale against overexposure to sun. LOL!

Buy her some self tanning lotion. She can stay tan and not get skin cancer.

Have her watch the movie "There's Something about Mary" and pay special attention to the older lady in it.

take her to florida (or somewhere else hot). the old people there look twice their age from all the sun exposure. and then show her the old people in sweden (or somewhere else cold)

alternitively show her pictures or tell her you had to go to the dermatologist to check out a mole, say skin cancer runs in the family and if your having problems when you never sunbathe, she should be REALLY careful. its a white lie but its important lol.

Make her watch There's Something About Mary. If she doesn't care about skin cancer she'll definatly care about leathery sagging skin.
