I'm having trouble deciding what to get my god daughter for her Christening. I wanted to get her something special and from the heart. Do you have any ideas?

It's amazing to me how many people can not answer the simplest Catholic question without resorting to bashing.
I think you should get her a locket with her picture in it from that day. She will treasure it forever.

Erin and Elias have the best ideas here.
If your intent is to stay away from religious items, this really limits your possibilities. A lot of people recommend jewelry, but doesn't that seem a bit chiche?
Go with Erin's savings bond idea. Your god daughter's parents will probably hold onto it until she's out of high school or something. By then it will be worth more than it's face value - and come in handy as well.
Elias is highlighting your responsiblity as a god parent. Definitively teach your god daughter the Faith - especially if there doesn't seem to be anyone else coming forward teaching her about the Lord.

If you'd like to keep it a non-religious gift, you have several options. One is a piece of jewelry that she won't be able to wear until she is older. You could also have a small keepsake dish/plaque/picture frame/trinket box engraved with her name, the occasion, and the date. The frame would be particularly appropriate as you could display a photo of the blessed event for her.
One gift that I got for my Christening and still have is a very nice, white, plush Gund stuffed rabbit (substitute animal of your choice here). It wasn't a toy I played with much; my mother kept it in a plastic bag on a high shelf in my closet. It was taken down from time to time for me to play with while supervised when I got to be old enough not to try and stuff it in my mouth. As a result, it is in pristine condition and serves as a lovely (and cuddly!) keepsake.
Finally, one thing I often do for babies born to my friends and relations is have a $50 savings bond sent to the child. It might seem impersonal, but it is something that will be useful to her when she is older. It's something of a tradition in my family, so the savings bonds I received when I was born/baptized paid for my books my first semester at college. That meant a lot more to me than a shelf full of keepsake trinkets that needed to be packed up and moved, redisplayed, dusted, etc.

As the god-parent, your gift to this child is constant support and guidance in her life. You take on the responsibility to teach the faith to her even if her parents do not. Your gifts should convey that from the start. Since babies are primarily visual, a basic cross or even a picture to be placed in the child's room would work. I personally favor the one with the two children being watched over by the angel. Make sure it is blessed.

For my confirmation, my Mom (a devout Catholic) gave me a book of Nostradamus' writings. -- Her point was to expose me to other concepts of what Is (God).
I'd suggest a small library of other belief systems. A varied library, or perhaps just one comparitive book on the world's religions. Even the Vatican recognizes that the church is in a pursuit of understanding of the transcendental Be-Ing we refer to as God. Which is why, for example, Pope John Paul II saught council with The Dalhi Lama, Imams, Medicine Workers, etc.
Your role as GodMother is important, as you know. Don't hessitate to share your pursuit of an understanding of God with your GodDaughter. -- It's something you'll both benefit from.

The BEST Gift you can give that child is the knowledge that it is not just the Blood of Jesus shed at Calvary that washes sins but the message He brought to mankind just like all others who had come before Him! Teach her that!!!

Jewellery eg bracelet or silverware to keep when she's older. You could send money so parents can start a savings account.
