First gut your trout, then place on foil, season with salt and pepper, put a few knobs of butter on it. Wrap with the foil, and place in medium oven, until cooked (approx. 20-30mins). Unwrap and enjoy

If its actually wild trout thats one thing. If its from a stocked river its another.

If its wild, prepare it any way you like.

If it is stock trout there is one very important step that needs to be done before cooking the trout. Buy buttermilk and marinade the trout in it along with a little salt for at least one day in the fridge. If you do not do this there will be a "stocked" taste to the trout. Some people can tell, some can't. After you let it sit in buttermilk, prepare it however you'd like.

Fried, blackened (very nice option *blackened does not mean with pepper, use a cast iron pot, let it get red hot and then throw the trout on it, season before cooking), baked, ect...

Get some fish seasoning, you can get it from most bigger corner shops, definitely from a supermarket.Lay your fish on double sided foil, leaving enough foil to fully wrap the fish in.Add a large knob of real butter and lightly season with pepper and the fish seasoning.Cut up half an onion and a whole tomato.
Then wrap it all in foil and put it on a low heat for several hours. In the oven.
About 40 mins before you take out the trout.Put some salted Basmarti rice in a saucepan (after washing it of course). Then cut up the other half of the onion put it on the rice.Put cold water on the top ensuring it is only a couple of inches above the rice, then bring to the boil,as soon it has boiled cover it up and very slowly simmer it,keep checking and when all the water has disappeared uncover the rice and carry on cooking for about another 10 Mins,so the rice won`t be soggy, then serve with a nice table wine such as Hock.

In Colorado Trout is really popular at restaurants and the most common preparation is to place lemon and a little butter salt and pepper in the cavity then wrap bacon slices around the fish and place it in the oven at 350 for 15-20 minutes until the bacon is cooked. The bacon makes skin peel right off and the bones easy to remove when eating serve with a green salad and some mashed garlic and parsley potatoes - Enjoy!

I like what the rest said about butter and salt etc. I put streaky bacon, olive oil with a pinch of pepper inside the trout and chhopped onion. Wrap it in foil and place in pre heated oven for 40 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease shallow baking dish and lay fileted trout in dish. Dot with butter and season lightly with salt and paprika, then lightly cover with a mix of two parts sour cream to one part mayonnaise (recipe calls for "4 spoons sour cream and 2 spoons mayo" but depends on the size of the fish, adjust as needed). Top with mushrooms (canned or freshly sauteed). Bake 30 min or until fish is tender.

Trout is very versatile. And delicious, even simply made with butter and lemon. It's also great if you coat it in ground pecans and saute it.
