specifically, how has my picture masterfile, with some 2,000 or more images in it has been converted to this format? It resulted in them being reduced to 96x96 pixels, and very small sized pictures? seems all the changes were done at the same time... as if it were done by an exe. file. How can I find what did it, and how I can restore my precious pics to their original and robust sizes??

A thumbs.db file is simply an index of images in a directory, that Windows creates to speed up the process of previews for the files.

It does NOT resize the images, it simply makes a small copy in it's index.

If the original files are not there, you have deleted them. Check recycle bin. If not there, try a file recovery tool like "recover my files" to see if it can retrieve them
