I am considering applying for a job as a police officer. To apply, I have to be able to do 9 pushups. I can't even do one! Any tips for a fast way to condition my body to do them?

I have to run a 1.5 miles in 22:50, which I can do.
I totally agree that anyone who is applying should be able to do the pushups and be in shape. I just have to do the minimum to be hired. If I am hired, then I have to continue working out and then go to the academy. I'm nowhere near ready to hit the streets as an officer, I just want to do the minimum so I can get in and then continue to work on my body. Great tips so far, y'all....

The reason push ups are hard to do is due to the extra fatty tissue built up around your waist. It is a vicious cycle to break but don't despair. It is not hard to do.
First of all, avoid all fatty foods for a while as you try and build up your muscles and stamina. Otherwise you will be creating "tough" fatty tissues instead of building any muscles.
Before excercising, do a lots of stretches. Try some simple yoga routines, especially the poses which help stretch your lower back and stomach muscles. I love the "cobra posture" for one. You lie on your stomach with your arms to your side. Then keeping your entire lower body and your arms on the ground, lift your torso. As you do this, look up toward the ceiling. You will feel your stomach muscles and your spine stretching. This is actually the reverse of push ups but it is great preparation for the actual push ups later.
In the beggining, do your push ups with bended knees. To make it more fun, think of this is as a sex postition. Trust me it works. LOL.
Always start with slow and short routines. Like may be a set of five short push ups and a bit of rest. Try this five times per sitting. If one is all you can do then just do one, rest and repeat. The idea is to do at least 10 push ups at a time and may be 3 to 4 sets at a time.
You must never make the initial routines too difficult because that will only discourage you to continue. Remember that a journey of even a thousand miles begins with a first step. So you must make this first step so interesting and easy that you will keep going. After this the law of motion will take over and you will be on your way.
After you get this job, come over to my place. And remember to bring those hand-cuffs (mmmmmmmm....), ok?
Good luck!

Start by doing them on your knees Do 20, rest, 20 more, rest, and 20 more. Do that every day. Then, after a week, try doing a couple at the beginning of each set with your knees up. And, over time, do more and more on your toes. It will take a long time, but eventually, you will be able to do all 20 on your toes.
Note, be very concerned about 'form'. Keep your back straight and go all the way down. They will require you to do them *right*.
I agree with what other people have said. If you are struggling with this, relatively easy requirement, how are you doing with the rest? Can you run a mile in 10 minutes? Can you do any pull-ups? You might be looking at 6 months of hard work in a gym before you are really fit enough to qualify.

well start with the girl ones, on the knees.
Other than that, just do it!! it's mostly a mind game anyway.
9 push-ups aren't that hard, just keep trying mutliple times a day..... I mean, if I am ever in trouble, I hope the officer trying to help me can at least do 10 pushups!!! Otherwise How the hell are they going to save anyone!!??!?!

Yeah, start doing them. Unfortunately, without some sort of steroids, there is no quick way to do what you want. You'll need some chest and arm exercises to build up the strength you need. Gradually increase weights and duration of the exercise. Try getting a month-to-month membership somewhere and get started! It may even be in your best interest to get a trainer to show you some exercises that will give you the quickest results.

Get on your knees to do them, or do them using a bed or crate to create an incline.
If you can't even do 1 pushup, you have a lot of work to do. Try going to a gym and using a chest machine instead, so you can adjust the weight.
Good luck!

You cannot even do one push-up? Have you looked into the other requirements? Because you might have a bit more prep work than you anticipated.
The more you do them (or try to do them) the more you will be able to do.
Good luck

i know it sounds odd, but start with "girly" bushups -normal up downs but on your knees instead of on your toes- then after you do alot of them your arms should be strong enough to do a real pushup, do it slowly and eficiantly
GOOD LUCK ON BEING A POLICE OFFICER!
