There is NOTHING to be afraid of!!
Go to the store (fresh market is the best) and pick out a fillet of any type of fish you'd like. Place it on a broiling pan, sprinkle it with a little salt & pepper or some lemon-pepper, and broil it till it looks firm (turns a solid color and doesn't jiggle). Don't forget to flip 1/2 way through!
You can't go wrong with simple! Also go to a library and borrow a few cook books and experiment with some recipes!
Fish is SO simple! Enjoy!!

Red snapper
Just have it scaled at the fish market where you buy it. Remember the eyes should be clear not cloudy-that means its fresh. If you are in doubt ask another customer that's what I do. Soak it in a large bowl with water and lemon or lime for at least ten minutes ( to clean). Rinse of and season with old bay or Lawry's or a little of both add onions, peppers, scallions, garlic, a little butter or margarine, squeeze about half a lime over it and leave the lime in the bowl while seasoning, a little thyme, one scotch bonnet pepper chopped. Mix seasoning with hand and let sit for Atlas fifteen minutes. Put in a baking pan and cover place in the oven at 450 and cook for at least 45 minutes or until done.
I am sorry about the mumble jumble because I do not cook with recipes so I was just trying to recollect my actions. This is like second nature to me, so I needed to visualize all the ingredients.
You can always go to recipezaar.com for detailed recipes. But remember fish in general is easy to cook.

I don't like fish, but can actually eat these two recipies they both use tilapia. But I guess any white fish would do.
I layer sliced onion, pepper and carrot in the bottom of a large piece of tin foil (you could also use parchment paper, but I don't make it enough to buy parchment paper), then season the fish with salt and lemon pepper. Top with about 1 tsp. of olive oil. Wrap the fish up tight with the foil/parchment paper and bake at 375 for about 15 minutes. It's really simple, tastes great with seasoned rice or buttered egg noodles.
Another recipe that I make, that takes slightly more ingredients, but is simple and easy has no name for me. I coat the tilapia lightly in flour that I have seasoned with salt and pepper. Sautee this on high in a frying pan with olive oil just until the sides are lightly browned. The fish will not be cooked through. In the same pan fry up some about 1/4" slices of lemon. Just let them get brown on both sides. Then add some type of liquid to the pan. I prefer white wine, but stock or even seasoned water would do. I would say about 1 c., it's about 1/2" in my frying pan. Let this simmer scraping up the bits from the bottom of the pan for about 5 minutes. Then add the fish back to the pan and let it simmer about 5 more minutes. Top the fish with the sauteed lemons for the last 1 - 2 minutes (depends on the thicknes of your fish). I also like to add capers to this if I have them on hand. If I don't it's not a big deal. Again, rice, cous cous, or egg noodles would be fine with this, but I like a simple crusty bread.

There are so many! Tilapia, salmon, cod, orange roughy, catfish, sole, trout........on and on. All are very quick and easy to cook. They are baked in 20 minutes at 425 degrees. You can do a simple butter and lemon sauce over them after baking (or broiling for 10 minutes per side) or get fancier as you get used to them. One that is super easy is to put a bed of fresh baby spinach on a sheet of aluminum foil, top with tilapia, cod or sea bass (if you can afford it, I can't), grate 1 teaspoon ginger over it, top with 1 teaspoon minced garlic and 1 tablespoon Marsala or Sherry, a little salt and freshly ground pepper. Seal foil, bake at 425 for 25 minutes. The flavor is divine, the cleanup too easy. And you are a gourmet chef!

Orange Roughy is my favorite. Simply get a fillet and place it on a big piece of tin foil. Wash a hand full of asparagus stalks and place on top of the fish. Squeeze lemon over top and season with your favorit seafood spices, fold the tin foil and place in a preheated 450 degree oven for 15 minutes or so. Here is salmon recipe too and I just replace the salmon with orange roughy. Enjoy. Even my 3 year old gobbles this up!

Baked Fish
1 1/2 - 2 lbs. red snapper or any other firm white fish
1 box cherry tomatoes
about 1 cup pitted black olives or to taste
2 cloves garlic
1 onion, chopped
1/4 to 1/2 lb feta cheese, or to taste
Coat fish lightly with mayo or olive oil and lay in a shallow baking dish. Put in a 350F oven to bake. While fish is cooking, saute onion until translucent, add garlic, tomatoes, and olives and cook just until tomatoes collapse. Just before fish is done, top with crumbled feta and cook just until cheese softens/melts. Top with veggies and serve.
