If you're just trying to remove a couple of the sites, you can just highlight the sites with your mouse and delete them. If you don't want the sites to show up at all, you can go into your internet tools settings and click on the delete button, then click on delete history. This should clear out that list. To keep it clear, go to the bottom of this tools window and change the number of days saved to 0. However if you do the second option, ALL of the sites will be gone, and you'll have to type the address to your sites.

If you have Internet Explorer 7, click on Tools, down to Browser options then under History, clear the URLs and also searches if you want. If you have earlier version, you should have history icon on the toolbar area, click on it which displays a left pane with your history set out in days, just delete the older ones. Easier to do it this way than finding your history and cookie folders.

if you just type a couple of more letters, the names start dropping off

Also if you go to Tools, Internet Options, General, under Browsing History there is a Settings button. You can set how many days it keeps the history so the real old ones disappear but the ones you use daily will stay.
