I do not care, and, I would not then either. I think Press 1 for English, then, they can start down the list 57 other languages. I will push 1, not listen to the rest, and, get on with my day & my life. I have far bigger things to worry about then pushing a button.

The sensible thing for businesses to do would be to have two phone numbers - one for English and one for Spanish. They'd still be able to deal with all their customers without irritating some of them.
And in case you're not aware, there are plenty of countries where businesses have a "press 2 for English" system set up for their non-native customers. Usually they have just the local language(s) and assume all the other foreigners can manage English if not the local language. This is just good business, as in a lot of countries, there are people working for international companies just for a few years, and these people do business in English at work.

We need an amendment that's makes English the official language of this country, and all documents and voting will be in English. If voter wants to have the ballot in anther language they can request one at the time of voting but must prove that when they got their citizenship they received a wavier of the English requirement
Then the phone company can have us press whatever they want

I would fly into a maniacal rage, or not.
I would perhaps be peeved if English was the third choice.
Even if we made English the official language as someone else wanted, private businesses could still offer their services in whatever language they wanted.

I know what you mean. My dad came to the USA in 1927 at age 7.He didn't speak English and none of the Italian, German,Greek, French,Polish,Russian,Hungarian,Portuguese,Swedish,Or any other immigrant children did. They all learned together in school and went home and taught their parents English.

Or 4 for "Pig Latin".
I think it is insane that we have to press 1 or 2 or whatever for English. What is also wrong, is if I spoke a language other than spanish why isn't my language a choice. If I were French, or Chinese, or Russian. Apparently Spanish is more important.

LOL!! This is an argument that many non-Spanish speaking people have posed. I myself am an immigrant from Poland and sometimes get frustrated. On the other hand, you have to realize that Spanish is the US' second language. Part of that has to do with immigrants not learning the language and culture of the US, and the US making it easy for them by providing everything in their language.
Also, Portuguese is spoken in two countries, Spanish in two continents, so it's hard to make that argument.
