I am beginning calligraphy, and I'd like to know what kind of brush is best--that is, easiest to control, and one that produced consistent lines and strokes. What kind of material or hair is best? And should I choose a soft, medium-soft, or hard-brisle bush?

You are asking a bunch of a brush.... and it will be the one that controls it that determines that. Chinese brushes only come in a few varieties but big ones only come in good quality (no idea what they are made of)

My advice is: Bigger is better. It still must feel natural to hold.
A large one will give you great control and consistency. Take the medium hard (if you have that choice).
