The Jerusalem cross was the emblem of Templar Crusaders, and may have been the personal arms of Templar Godfrey de Bouillon.

The Jerusalem cross has four arms at equal distances, symbolizing the four directions, and the belief that Jerusalem was the spiritual center of the earth.

The more complex version of the symbol (the one your father presented you with) represents the spread of Christ's message through the four evangelists (Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John), who are represented by the four additional "crosslets."

The Jerusalem Cross was first used as a coat of arms for the Latin Kingdom in Jerusalem. During the Crusades, it was referred to as the "Crusaders Cross." The four small crosses are symbolic of the four Gospels proclaimed to the four corners of the earth, beginning in Jerusalem; the large cross symbolizes the person of Christ.

Jesus died on the cross for us because we are sinners. God does not want us to sin in any way, and tells us that if we sin, we are without God. So we needed Jesus to take those sins away on the cross (he defeated death and the devil when he died and rose from the dead) so that we can be with God. I would suggest praying (truthfully) that God would lead you, and show you the truth about sin, then start reading your Bible. I would suggest starting with the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John - the first 4 books of the New Testament), then going back to the beginning and starting at Genesis. Each time you prepare to read, pray to God that he would help you understand the passage, and show you how to live your life.

Yes it is the same as any cross. If you live in the states it's not something you see very often so it will be a conversation piece. It was thought of as the crusaders cross.
