I Agree with frispy69 if its a hard disk recorder you want then the sony is the one to buy. I have the RDR - HXD860, it has freeview built in as well. bought this last December for £400, now there is probably a new model so this one will be cheaper. Nevertheless it is still a fantastic machine easy to set up easy to use and very highly recommended. Enjoy.

If you are looking for a DVR that will record in high def, TiVo is coming out with a new generation machine that is supposed to be really good and should cost around $200. If you have DirecTV or one of the other satellite providers, they offer a DVR with a USB port so you can transfer all of the HD shows you have recorded to an external hard drive

HD as in Hard Drive recorder? then go for the Sony RDR-HXD860 (What Hifi winner £200 +) Its a multi format (copes with all the different types of available discs) recorder with 160gb hd, more than enough.
If HD means HI-Def then no players are availabale yet.

At the moment, there are no DVD recorders with HD capability on the U.K market.
OK, for the oh-so-smart people giving me the thumbs down, name an HD-DVD recorder model - just one will do...
That's right, you can't think of one, because they don't exist!

HD-DVD appears to be cheaper than blu-ray
apparently wall mart in America is stocking cheap HD-DVD drives.
If you have an xbox 360 you can get an add-on discounted that reads HD-DVD.
for Blu-ray the ps3 is probably the cheapest option.
