in my country (UAE) all the shops close from suhur to iftar. all of the restaurants i mean. why is that?

isnt the point of fasting lost when there is no temptation to resist?

and the population is 70%+ expat non-muslims. is this fair to them?

your views.

Shame

Not sure about the reason of that in UAE. Maybe the restaurants owners just refuse to sell food during fasting time due to limited customers and to cut costs. In my country, also a Muslim country, it's business as usual. In fact, more food is being sold during fasting month (mostly for iftar) than other months.

I understand what you are saying but look at the business view point, those restaurants are probably loosing money by staying open during the hours of Ramadan. I am having no problems with my fast this year!

The hotel restaurants are always open, and some of them are not expensive. But if you can't afford it, why not bring a sandwich or some fruit from home?

Christmas is worse in some ways over here.

If you combine Christmas with easter etc then you get almost one month of holidays that everyone has to take.
