What are they for? My pup has had her initial shots at her breeder, but I guess I need to take her in for some more. It makes me wonder if they're really necessary. They put all sorts of crap in with people immunizations, I'm sure the animal ones are even less controlled.
Are they just a way for vets to make money off of us on a yearly basis? I don't kennel my pet, I don't fly with her. Why do I need to get them for her?

go to the leerburg.com site and look up vaccinosis, then make up your mind, it s under the puppy section and is very informative, although where I live I do give some vaccines, like parvo. You might get a different "take" on it than the vets will give.

Yes, you need to get the puppy's full series of vaccinations. You are truly risking your puppy's life not to do it. Parvo and Distemper are frequent killers of unvaccinated pups. Parvo can be carried in on your clothing, your shoes, even your hands if you would pet a dog with it. It is an airborn virus so your puppy could catch it if it never left your yard. It is a horrid death. Follow up with a booster in a year but then, you can actually, safely go to a two or three year booster schedule for the combination vaccine but must follow the law on the rabies vaccination and boosters.

The puppy's immunization rounds are extremely important. These slowly, and safely, build up her immunity to diseases. If you don't board her, she doesn;t need the bordatella vaccine, but that is not required anyways. There is a lot of debate whether a dog continuously needs booster shots yearly, but most agree its important for the puppy shots and their first year boosters. Some go on an every other year schedule after that, or even every three year schedule.

there is currently alot of controversy about over immunizing pets, but I have yet to see anyone recommend skipping it completely. I live in Miami in a pretty developed area, but in the last 8 months I have had to watch a fox and a raccoon die of distemper in my front yard, and I have also seen rats cruising through my back yard, so personally I will err on the side of caution and make sure my dogs are protected against potentially fatal diseases.

They're are boosters to make the original shots more potent, if you don't take your puppy for booster shots, the affect of original immunization will disapear in time in your puppy's system and it will be like you never had them done in the first place.

Remember people, the asker is asking about whether or not to have the vaccination done, its whether or not she needs to do it again? How much IS too much? I believe that a yearly vaccination is sufficient for a dog that is never boarded.

I really don't believe in regular shots for my indoor cats, but for a dog you have to have rabies shots, and I wouldn't risk not getting the parvo and distemper ones just for safety's sake. Those are important ones.
