Mutts breeders DON'T know what they are doing. And now a lab/poodle/basset cross is NOT awesome. Genetic diversity is a sword that swings both ways, you might want to actually do some in depth research on dog breeds and the various genes and genetic issues before making blanket statements. I'm just looking for basic behavior stuff, querks, etc. - Couldn't say since its a mix breed and nothing about them fits a pattern or standard of any sort.

Technically you're both right. A Labradoodle is a cross between a labrador and a poodle. I presonally think they look stupid... But it's just one of these crazes, it (hopefully) will pass. The naming of mongrels, I mean. If I did that, in my lifetime, I'ce had a Border Russell Terrier and I currently have what could be an Alsuskollie (Alsatian/Husky/Collie) Is it really so awful to have a mongrel? I love my mongrel doggie, my little Zephyr. When people ask, I say GSD cross, yes, but I don't launch into some sort of "Oh, it's a *new* breed!" abomination ¬_¬

This is not a true breed, but rather a mix of a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. This is not accepted as a breed by any reputable registry, such as the AKC, and they are merely mutts. Mutts that you "might" know the pedigrees of registered parents, but mutts all the same.
Never buy one from a "breeder" as a reputable breeder would NEVER deliberately breed mixed breeds of dogs. So you are basically getting two poor quality dogs bred to create poor quality mixes with a high price tag and cutesy name to sell them fast.

It's a made up name for a mutt - that's all.
Some unscrupulous breeder got a lab and poodle accidental breeding, thought it looked cute, and advertised it as "hypo allergenic" or some such con and got clueless people to buy it for a lot of money.
A mutt is a mutt, no matter what the breeds went into breeding it.
Only a known, registered breed and recognized by the AKC is an actual pedigree dog or acutal "breed".

Yes there are.
I normally don't do this but in this case I will. I am cutting and pasting my answer to another question about labradoodles. The question was - What is wrong with Labradoodles.
This is my opinion:
I work in rescue. Up until a year ago I was a board member in a Lab rescue.
Here's MY problem with the Labradoodles I encountered.
Every one that was DUMPED in our rescue (and with the organization I volunteer with now)
SHED.
EVERY ONE.
DOZENS of them. They ALL SHED. These dogs where specifically bred NOT to shed. Every one was surrendered to both organizations because they DID SHED. All of the families and individuals who surrendered them, paid big bucks for them. One family paid $2500. for their dog.
Each of these dogs came from a different breeder who "guaranteed" the dogs not to shed. They lied.
None of these breeders would take their dogs back when they did shed.
None of these breeders would give these families their money back.
Most of these families had kids with allergies. The kids were allergic to the dog and so they wasted tons of money on a dog that was billed to be "non-shedding" and "allergy-free"
It was a crock.
All the dogs were nice though and we adopted them out to other families who love them. (I'm not knocking the dogs themselves - they were all very sweet dogs - this isn't the fault of the dog).
THAT's my problem with labradoodles - and Goldendoodles and Doodles in general. They are a CROCK and their breeders are liars (and basically Thieves.

Labradoodle is a name that back yard breeders and pet mills put on a mixed breed (poodle and labrador) to make them sound cute and incresase their profitability. Unfortunately designer dogs are becoming popular and people will pay money for anything that sounds original. You have to admit labradoodle, schnoodle, yorkipoo, etc. sounds better than mutt. Technically they do exist, but I would have to say that your correct as they are not purebreds.

Indeed there is, it is a cross breed dog using a male Labrador with a female Poodle which give Labradoodle puppies. I suppose if one were to use a male Poodle with a female Labrador would one then have a Poobrador?

In the same way that if you mated a Lab to an Akita, you could call the pups Labkitas or to a Pomeranian, Laberanians
It is not a recognised breed, it is a cross breed. They are not recognised by any national kennel club
