Hey there, I'm having a Sigmoidoscopy next week along with Hemorrhoid Ligation (banding). Has anyone had these two proceedures done before? If so, does it take very long and is it painful? Any information would be appreciated.

Thx

I, myself, have not had it done, but have assisted the colon/rectal surgeon on many occasion. Although it may be a little embarrassing with your bum in the air, no one in the room even cares about your bum. The procedure takes little time and there is NO pain other than a little stretch from the instrument used to SLIGHTLY open your rectum. You will not feel the bands go on nor will you feel them after wards. Although you may feel a little "fullness" it is just from the hemorrhoids that have been banded and are now swelling. They will soon "die" and be eliminated.

Depending on how many internal hemorrhoids you have, the procedure should only take up to 1/2 hour at the most.

You can find out more about natural hemorrhoids cure here http://curehemorrhoid.info
Diarrhea can contribute to hemorrhoid formation because the bowel undergoes pressure strains due to the condition. Undue pressure on the veins that make up internal hemorrhoidal structures can worsen existing damage. Internal hemorrhoids are not visible, unless they proplapse (protrude) from the anus, either constantly or during a bowel movement. If this is the case, then you have a grade III or IV internal hemorrhoid. If the protrusion is on the anal verge or the area surrounding the anus, then its likely an external hemorrhoid. Reducing pressure from issues of diarrhea and constipation will help. Not straining during a bowel movement, not lifting heavy objects, not sitting for extended periods, all will help.

An external hemorrhoid is simply a vein located at the anal verge, the wall of which as weakened and protruded. Don't push on it, this will only increase pressure and worsen it. The body has to repair the vein wall and rebuild the integrity. This takes time, perhaps weeks, if all goes well. Use sitz baths and over-the-counter medications such as pads or creams to provide symptom relief in the interim. These won't solve the issue long term, but will give the tissue a better chance at self-healing.

Internal hemorrhoids are a different matter and require more intervention. Your best bet is to educate yourself about the condition, its causes and what options there are to treat it both short and long term. Don't ignore it though, hemorrhoids tend to become chronic in nature, lasting years or decades in some cases.

A sigmoidoscopy goes a short distance into the colon, to the sigmoid colon to be exact. That is the part of the colon on the left side of your body, right after the rectal vault. It is usually not painful and only takes a few minutes. I worked for a gastro and we always did sclerotherapy (injecting the hemorrhoids with a saline mixture to cause it to shrink). I have no experience with banding but I am sure that there will be some pain with it. You will probably be given pain medicine to take until the bands do their job. Wish I could be more specific but can't. Good luck.

Rubber band ligation is used for larger internal hemorrhoids or those that fail to respond to injection sclerotherapy. With mixed internal and external hemorrhoids, only the internal component should be rubber band ligated. The internal hemorrhoid is grasped and withdrawn through a stretched 1⁄4‑inch diameter band, which is released to ligate the hemorrhoid, resulting in its necrosis and sloughing. One hemorrhoid is ligated every 2 wk; 3 to 6 treatments may be required. Sometimes, multiple hemorrhoids can be ligated at a single sitting.
Please see the web pages for more details on Sigmoidoscopy and Rubber band ligation.
