The Tanganyika Groundnut Scheme was a plan to cultivate tracts of what is now Tanzania with peanuts. It was a project of the British Labour government of Clement Attlee. It was abandoned at considerable cost to the taxpayers when it did not become profitable

An utter waste of Taxpayers money by a bunch of incompetents financed by an ignorant Government and (I'm sorry to say) EXACTLY what we get to this day whenever the Government gets involved in trying to dictate / direct / control ANYTHING of a 'commercial' nature ..

... in fact, the sort of madness (paying farmers NOT to grow food), chaos and corruption that is almost EXACTLY what the EU Common Agricultural Policy causes :-)
