I was talking to my mother about her belief in jesus and from what I gathered, the things she reveres most about the icon (i.e. kindness, charity, love for your fellow man, etc.) are all ideal human traits. Is jesus really just a substistute for the good in humanity?

You are not stupid: your question is too intelligent for the goons in the audience. Your thinking is several levels above the literalist loonies on here.

Like most religions, Jesus was indeed used as a manifstation of the good traits of humanity. Most, if not all religions have a similar deity/prhophet/icon etc, that represents this concept.

I am not doubting the existance of any or all deities, I am a Pagan personally, but accept all other faiths as valid, just different. A different path to the same truths.

Have a great day

All Goodness comes from God. Any goodness that is found in humanity ultimately finds its source in God.

"Is jesus really just a substistute for the good in humanity?" This question makes no sense because Jesus IS God - the second person of the Trinity - and is therefore the SOURCE of goodness, not a substitute.

Jesus doesn't substitute anything. Jesus is love, He died for our sins, the ultimate sacrifice, what better way to represent "good?" As humans, we have the choice of doing good or bad, and we struggle with these traits daily. Jesus came in the flesh, with the same choices as us, and He always chose the "good." Wishing you the best, friend.

I do not believe in the biblical 'Jesus', however putting a lot of the teachings that are attributed to him to work in your life can help you to live more fully.

The majority are common sense - be nice to people, etc., now if only 'christians' would stop ignoring the teachings of the guy they claim to believe in, then maybe we could make the world a better place.

Jesus displayed many, if not most, of the characteristics we consider 'good' in humanity. But let no one forget that he also had a temper. Jesus was human, thus Jesus was not perfect.

Jesus showed us how to live. He took on flesh, as though to say, "Look, it CAN be done...just do as I do, and you will get through this."

There is much more to Jesus than just human traits of compassion; however, if you truly learn all of those, you will not have wasted your time.

In no way should Jesus be viewed as just a icon of these quality's that you mentioned. He is and was a living creature. Jesus is the son of Jehovah god. Jehovah is the creators real name(Psalms 83:18 in Older King James bibles). Jesus did display all of the quality's you mentioned to a superlative degree and should be looked to as a example for us to follow. His main reason for coming to earth was to provide his perfect life as a ransom for all mankind sins. So his purpose in our life should be That we view him as our savior from everlasting death in the common grave of mankind (Gehenna) .

Jesus was perfect and pure yet was crucified. When we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior, His death counts as ours; our sins are counted as His, and His death pays the penalty of those sins. So, the way I see it He is a substitute - a substitute for us on the cross.

Jesus does not represent humanity. He is God. He created us and because we are unable to save ourselves and there was no other perfect sacrifice to atone for sin, He took on human form and sacrificed Himself to pay for all sin.
