The link someone already posted is a good one.

I'd like to further agree with the posts on that a twin is not two singles. A Full is also a Double which is two singles/twins. A twin is just another name for a single.
A California King is not the largest. It is the longest, but a regular king is the widest.
Also there is the Olympic Queen size, which is slightly wider than a normal Queen. It's not on that link's list and isn't a common size but it's around and widely available at any place selling beds (finding sheets and such is more challenging though). It's great for a larger bed in a room that can't quite fit a king.

A King Mattress is approximately 76 x 80 inches. This ample size is the most comfortable for two adults. The extra space in width allows for unrestricted movement during the night and provides room for those animal lovers that like to sleep with their pets at their side. A Queen Size Mattress is approximately 60 x 80 inches. It is a popular choice for couples, and not as bulky as the King Mattress which looks better in a large room. A Full Size Mattress is approximately 54 x 75 inches. It is ideal for one adult. A Full Mattress fits well in smaller rooms or guest rooms and can save you money on cheaper bedding. A Twin size mattress is 39 x 75 inches. It is the smallest standard mattress available and is ideal for children and easy to move around.

Roll away beds list them as 'twin' size but are only 31"-33" wide a real twin size bed is 39" wide so to be sure it is a real twin size bed find out the width if it is 39" if is only 31"-33" then it is a smaller size some call this a 'single bed'

A single and twin are the same thing. A full or double bed is the size of two twins. A queen is larger than a full.

The bed sizes I am familiar with are (and these are widths) cot, 30 inches; twin 39 inches; three-quarter, 48 inches; full, 54 inches; queen, 60 inches; king, 72 inches.
Two people can sprawl fairly comfortably in a queen-size bed.
If you live in a two-story house, make sure the stairwell is large enough to accommodate the mattress. (We found out the hard way. They had to bend the mattress to get it up the stairs and we had to have a special two-piece foundation built.)

Its all about size. A California King is the biggest, then king, queen, and so on. as the sizes go up, not only do the beds get wider they also get longer. a full size bed is still a pretty small bed compared to a queen. but my advise would be get the king size bed.

a single and twin are the same, then you have extra long twin just to confuse things even more.
Full size is the next size up also know as a double and is NOT the width of 2 twin beds together.
Queen is the most popular of the 2 person beds.
Then you have king and california king.
