Koala babies eat their mother's poop (called pap) because their undeveloped digestive systems don't allow them to eat eucalyptus until they are older. As you probably know, eucalyptus --a koala's only food-- is poisonous. Babies are not yet able to process the poisons, relying instead on their mother's doing it for them.
This is really no different than a wolf cub eating it's mother's vomitus until they are able to digest solid foods.
