Do you just try not to think about it and hope for the best? Do you think God has a bad side? Do you simply assume the OT was written by men and the violent events never happened? If so, then why do you think the rest of the bible is accurate?

Let's face it... those who got wiped out weren't exactly following the commands of God. He continually told His people, do what I ask, don't make idols, don't worship false gods, trust me to provide, and life will be just dandy. But, being human, they didn't and they were killed, smote, destroyed, whatever you want to call it. While I do think He went overboard sometimes, He did continually tell us that the wages of sin were death.
I'm just thankful that He didn't get sick and tired of all of us and just wipe us out for good as we deserved. He has given us the ultimate chance, in our salvation through Christ.

These things happened, and happened for a reason.
Christians are supposed to use their minds, and NOT disregard anything from the Bible.
