Well, im doing my first round to iraq soon and I plan on taking my laptop with mic/webcam with me so I can keep in touch with my family at home. my question is how do I go about getting internet/phone in iraq? and will I have a phone on base that I can use untill I get these? Im not worried about going over there but just the thought of not being able to at least email my wife is making me a nervous wreck. thanks for the answers. =)

I am currently stationed in Iraq and I have internet in my room. It all depends on where you are going to be stationed. You can also use yahoo voice and make phone calls from your computer. Also, there are numerous MWR facilities located on most of the bigger camps here in Iraq. Where are you going to be stationed?

It depends on your MOS and where you will be stationed... There are a lot of different places you can stay depending on your job. Since your biggest worry about going to Iraq is e-mail, I take it you're not combat arms. There are plenty of internet and phone cafes. If you want personal internet, you will have to get with a COMO guy. They usually are in charge of the internet and always find a way to take care of themselves. I got my internet from a como friend who created a hotspot, but only because he lived next to the internet cafe. Good Luck. This may be a stretch, but you may be able to find an internet card for your laptop that will work there???

The majority of bases over there have internet cafes and phones. If you bring your laptop they may let you use it after they run a scan on it. We couldn't use mic/webcams at all.
Just be aware the phone and net go down alot. Usually the lines aren't to bad and you have a 10minute limit if I remember right (get some calling cards now). Good luck to you and stay safe.
