That is correct. Tipping is for a) showing the person he provided a good service and b) makes up for the low pay the person gets (which is what motivates the person to do a good job to get better tips). The owner is already compensated: as the owner it is his absolute job to provide good service (for which he is receiving profits) and he presumably does not get low pay.
It is somewhat of an insult to the owner to tip him as well; it's as if you're saying that his establishment doesn't make enough money to pay him well.

I go to a single barber barbershop so I have to assume he is the owner. I have never given a tip. The price is high enough already. I get great service and he doesn't seem to expect one from me. He gives me my change and does not wait for me to give some back.

I would like to know the answer to this too. The guy who does my hair owns the salon and seems to expect a tip. I dont understand why he would need one because all of the money he charges me goes directly to him anyway.

one does not have to, but I think if they are doing the work, they still deserve it. A good owner might put the tip aside for the help anyway.

Technically no, but if they themselves are doing the service I will usually tip them anyway.

it's not tacky or anything. most people say not to since that person is presumably making big money. tip if you like.
