Many five-year-olds can do it, especially if it's really something they want to do. You might try knee and elbow pads when he's learning; it makes it less scary and thus easier. But, and maybe it varies depending where you live, in my area there are lots of 5- and even 6-year-olds who still have training wheels. Where I am, I seriously doubt anybody would make fun of a 5-year-old who was still using them. When you say no one else has training wheels at school ... are they kindergartener's bikes? Or older kids'? You might ask around among the parents of your child's friends. Don't just assume he's behind his friends or will get made fun of.

Most children can learn how to ride a bike at 5. It is the perfect age for this. Let him use it for a few days with training wheels and start teaching him to use it without the training wheels this weekend. It took me half an hour to teach my son (5), it was much better than expected! But he rode it with training wheels first, for about a year.

Erica, you are absolutely right about kids being mean however, the situation might worsen itself if your child were to break an arm, a leg, etc without the training wheels. I can tell you that you need to reassure him that there is nothing to feel embarrassed about that he has to have training wheels on his bike. This might sound really stupid, but my child is 7 years old and has to still ride with training wheels on. Our old house was on a hill and virtually impossible for him to learn how to ride. Anyhow, to make him feel alot better about having training wheels on his bike, I put them on my bike, too. I told him that sometimes things are just out of your control and sometimes they are not, such as wearing glasses, which I do and that there is no reason for being embarrassed about, it is just something that I have to have. I made sure to tell him that I didn't need the training wheels, but I wanted him to keep that a secret so that the other kids would see me and think that is okay that a grown man needs that help, at least I'm hoping that is what they are thinking. It also would take the attention away from my child and put it on me which of course, I could take. Anyhow, let him ride with the training wheels and maybe adjust them up and down. Good Luck!

5 yrs old is usually old enough to start riding a bike but im not sure about to school unless your walking beside him. I would give him a little time to build up some leg muscles but he's of age he can learn. My son learned at 3 because he seen older kids riding without training wheels and wanted to be " cool." Start teaching him on some sort of hill. Of course not to steep but this gives him a chance to build up some speed and learn balance. Once he gets to the bottom of the hill he will more then likely spill over but eventually he will start getting further and further.

Ask him and see if he wants to try it.. though honestly, I think 5 is way too young to be letting him ride his bike to school unless you plan on walking or riding along with him.
It depends on him though. If he tries and can do it he's ready. All kids are different.... my 11 year old didn't learn until he was 6, my now 10 year old was riding without training wheels at age 3. So just ask him if he wants to try and have fun!

Its not age, its skill level and bravery. Ask him if he wants to learn.
I made my brother learn at 3. I just stuck him on the bike at the stop of a grassy hill and told him to pedal. He kept doing it over and over until he got it right. Took an afternoon...lol. But I was a mean big sister that day.

you should just run with him when he starts and if he starts falling just catch him. the best way to learn is to try.
