How do you become a master chef? In Australia there are no professional culinary schools like in America, so does that mean i will never be able to outrank an American chef? Or to become a master you have to win competitions?

I once worked for a chef who was going for his Master Chef designation. After you finish culinary school, it's like going for a master's degree in any other field. You work at a bunch of different places as head chef and document all your work. Like new dishes, events you've planned, if you're getting more customers, what you've been learning. And then they write basically a thesis which gets reviewed by a panel. It's a really long process to get the MC. And it's not about official competitions necessarily, more like competing against chefs your level and trying to be better than they are, more inventive, more customer base, getting more print reviews in papers and magazines.

P.S. You don't even have to be a Master Chef to out-do others. Some famous restaurant owners/chefs never even want to go for the MC.

Master chef is an American classification. However, the World Association of Chefs is a global qualification that will be recognized in over 80 countries. Read more about it here:

It will be introduced into Australia sometime in 2007, if it hasn't been already.
