I was an atheist as well. I've been a Christian for about 30 years and you can see from my avatar that I'm a lot more than 30 years old. Best thing that could have happened to me, turned my life around, thanks be to God!

Most people are religious before they become atheists. Most atheists are brought in a religion dominated society.
if you never "knew any better" then you are a rare person indeed.
Freud and C S Lewis are oranges and apples.
Also I've yet to have an atheist tell me I'm going to punished for all eternity.
Besides all you need to do is prove your god exists.I mean surely you must be able to do that
Oh and if you lack empathy it's because you're a sociopath. Not because of your religous beliefs. You don't sound particularily empathic now.

You were never an atheist. Maybe you feel out of your religion for a while, but not an atheist. At least not a very good one. Where did you get all this crap?
Lack of real empathy? You need religion to feel empathy?
Sincerity?
The way people live their lives? You know nothing about me and the way I live my life. Freud is the only example you could come up with for an atheist? Hardly. Why not Thomas Jefferson or someone of that caliber.

I've been an atheist since I was seven when I first heard about the invisible man in the sky that so many adults believed in - not my parents.
I spent many of the intervening 54 years learning about and searching for gods but none made his presence known.
I wasn't prepared to pretend I could see the invisible man even in my imagination - that'd be no better than having an invisible friend and that's just childishness.
Sounds like Pascal's Wager won you over as did the FEAR of going to hell if you don't go Jesus.
Man; I'm glad I'm not that scared of living and taking responsibly for all my own actions.
Good luck in your Fear Management.

Interesting. I was a Christian, but on examining the evidence from both sides, determined that there is no evidence for god. I also would say that many atheists that I know are highly empathic, in fact I'd hazard to say that most humans are inside of their groups.
I wouldn't begin to compare CS Lewis to Freud as the comparison has little meaning nor would I base my case for belief on a man, I would base it on the facts.

I was an athiest for about 3 years, from about age 12 to 15. Then I converted to agnosticism. About 5 years ago I decided that agnosticism was too extreme. I became an apathetic agnostic. "I don't know and I dont care." These are words to live by. After all, why would a god CARE if i believed in her?

Thank you for sharing your own personal experience. I'm glad my experience as an atheist is so much more positive.
I'm sure there are plenty of Christians who have had a similarly negative experience with their religion as you have with your lack thereof. Happiness is the responsibility of the individual and each individual's happiness will come about in a different manner. I am glad that you have found yours, but I wish you didn't have to fill a void with an imaginary friend to do so.
All the best.

So you are basically saying you were unable to be a moral person without the rules of your Bible. New flash, it is not Atheism that makes you like that.. It is your own behavior..
Just because you have no empathy and sincerity (which seems to have likewise crossed into your current beliefs) does not mean we all are the same as you.
You have no clue what truth is.. buh bye.

I am an atheist because I do know better.
I was a christian (thank goodness, not any longer), I was searching for a "higher" meaning and purpose to life.
Then I found it, create one for yourself, live your life honourably, you would not want to disgrace your family. Be generous in your life, afterall, you may need help someday yourself.
Don't put yourself above anyone else's life, (and this is for obvious reasons), you do not need a god or gods to tell you this.
If you do, I truly feel sorry for you. And I fear you and your god, afterall, your god could decide my life is worthless, and give you the job to eliminate me. That is truly something to be afraid of.
On the other hand, there is no one or one person telling me or giving me authority to remove anyone's life from this planet. I simply would not, my morals are part of me, not dictated to me. They do not change.
Clearly you can see the winner in these two scenarios.

You have said you were an atheist because you *knew* no better. I find this utterly remarkable.
If by the word *knew*, you mean, "convinced", then that is one thing. This is actually, belief, not knowledge. It may be very compelling or convincing for you, but does not easily transfer, evidentially, to others.
If, however, you used *knew* to mean, "was aware of", then I challenge you however to offer any evidence that is verifiable by others that allows you to *know* of the existence of a deity, beyond personal conviction or belief. This lies well outside the abstract realm of inductive reasoning. To knowledge, need only apply, objectivity.

"Atheists treat it like rubbish?"
Well it IS rubbish. If you defected it`s because you are weak-willed and need something or someone to prop you up.
Try standing on your own two feet, sticking up for yourself, and stop blaming others for your shortcomings. Or blaming a GOD if nothing goes right.
You are going to feel very foolish when you die and find out that there not only is no heaven, but no jesus and no gods.
Atheists can make predictions. Here`s mine:
I SHALL NOT GET `BEST ANSWER` FOR THIS.
How`s that for a miracle?
