Someone told me that information about the car targeted is also recorded (serial number, model, etc). That would mean that vehicles are equipped with RFID cards which I think is highly unlikely ... but then again, who knows! ... My point exactly, who knows? An answer from someone in law enforcement or someone who uses this type of equipment would carry a lot of weight here!

Thanks!

First off, you need to know that there is two diff. types of radar. Handheld (Stationary) and Vehicle mounted (moving)

Handheld is just that, held in your hand while the officer is not moving. This is the typical way that officers in the past has done radar, sit concealed in a place and use the radar on cars that go by.

Those type of radar guns normally only show the speed of the car that is speeding. Since the officer is stationary, it has no need to show the officer's speed.

Moving radar is mounted inside the officer's car. There are numerous brands and designs of moving radar but at the minimum they do two things. Show the officer's speed and the moving cars speed. The radar can show front radar or back radar, depending on if the officer is running radar in front or behind him.

I have seen mounted radar units with camera screens inside the cruiser. These camera screens will show the speeding car, get its tag and take a picture. On this screen will show time of day, date, officer speed and speeding car's speed.

Again, it depends on model and design of the radar unit. I have never heard of having cars targeted with serial number, model etc. It could be something new, but it seems rather unlikely.

There are two basic radar types in traffic enforcement.

1) Stationary
2) Moving

The stationary radar displays only the "target" speed.

The moving radar displays the "patrol" speed and the "target" speed.

When employed correctly radar is used to "confirm" the observations of the "target" vehicle. This means the officer is observing traffic movement and observes a potential speeder. The officer will, based upon training and experience, determine the violator speed and then verify the speed with radar. This is why the courts do not require an officer to show the radar reading to a violator because the officer testifies to the offense...not the radar equipment.

Best wishes.

It will show speed only. It may have a display that shows a speed that you "Locked" and or the speed of the patrol vehicle (if it is a moving radar). Other than that, it may have displays for squelch, range and various control settings such as volume, on/off stand-by etc.

a radar gun...

a dash mounted or hand held device that uses radar to calculate the speed of a moving object.

In some cases, alongside the radar gun is also a video camera (of some digital form) that can record the vehicle and plate # if its needed in the future as documentation or evidence.

So, if you get zinged by radar, it doesn't necessarily mean that your car can be picked out as the offending speeder, by either the technology, or the person wearing the badge.
