Hi all -
I am applying for a management trainee position. I submitted my cover letter and resume last week and will be calling the employer soon to follow-up and ask for an interview. I ended my cover letter saying, "I will follow up with you next week to discuss the possibility of arranging a personal interview at your convenience."

What exactly do I say when calling so that I don't sound too wordy or desperate?

"I realize you're busy and appreciate your taking my call. First, I wanted confirm you've received my application for the management trainee position and, second, to ask if there is a time we could meet to further discuss the possibility of my becoming a part of your team."

Next time don't do this. Hold the phone, keep your pants on. This could scare of some people. It shows you may be overconfident, desperate or have no regard for wasting their time. Some employers send a letter back to you saying they don't need your services if your responding to a certion opening. THIS time since you said you would follow up, go ahead and ask if they "had a chance to review your resume". An interview may not be the next step. You might have to fill out an application, take a drug test or some kind of back ground test.
