I mean, a life spent not having alcohol, or not cutting your hair, or not eating beef or pork.....because some ancestors (who to be fair, were born thousands of years before we even knew the earth was flat), said so, seems like a bit of a waste of time.

You'd think that if there really was an all powerful being, he would occasionally remind us with a bit of a a show, especially now we have the internet and video cameras etc. JUST once God/Allah/Budda/ or whoever the Mormans are worshipping, would show up, during the news and say 'Its me, i am all powerful, all knowing and you better start worshipping me, not the other three Bozo's!!'
In this day and age of enlightedment, 'faith' now reads to me as 'gullible'.

Happy to hear your discussions, but please remember in 100 years time, we will all just be fertilizer.....no heaven, no virgins in paradise,,,no everlasting harp playing on clouds etc.

Two ways I look at that:

1) Two people look at a beautiful abstract painting. They tell 2 different stories about what it is and what it's saying.

2) God is infinite. That means God is enormous to the 12 trillionth power and then some. "What God is" and "who God is" and "what God is saying" will always be too big for one person's human -- finite -- mind to grasp 100%. Our picture of God that we carry around in our heads will always be too small. But maybe if we put all our individual pictures of God together instead of fighting about who's right, maybe we'd not only have peace, but we might have a bigger, truer picture of God

Have you looked at the cocept that they are all right within their own bounds. If God made or even created all the diferent peoples of the world, who is to say that He didn`t give them all diferent rules to live by. Perhap out of nessecity the rules for each area had to be tailored to the specifics of that area and would not be workable in another area.
One good example would be the ban on eating pork in the middle east. Pigs were used as dustbins, eating remains of dead animals as well as kitchen leftovers, so they were a great sorce of illness and infection. So that law makes sence in that area.
So perhaps no contradition, perhaps they are all right. The problem comes when western people take over a middle eastern religion because they seem to have misslaid their own.

I love the way you say you are happy to hear our discussions but then declare yourself to have all the answers already! How is that any different to the claims of any faith system? It's just an opinion, and one which probably has no intelligent backing.

You are right that we can't all be right,,,,,your error is in assuming that we must all then be wrong (except you!).

As far as Christians are concerned, God shows up all the time. I have seen many miracles, and I have my own testimony of meeting God, plus the testimonies of countless other Christians. I have looked at the historical evidence for Jesus, the historical roots of Islam, the reliability of scripture, and the evidence from science. True, I only read books that support my own theory that Jesus is alive, but its hardly a blind faith. Like I said, I met Jesus so I have good grounds for believing He is alive.

Many great atheist thinkers have come to the same conclusion as me, without apparantly having a 'road to Damascus' experience like I had. If you dare, try reading Lee Strobel's books, or the Amy Orr -ewing book entitlted,' why trust the Bible.'

You asked a good question, it deserves looking at surely?

Lookintg for evidence?? Is there evidence that God does not exist??

Signs of God is everywhere to be seen if you dare to look. The design and perfect balance is to be marvelled at. We're learning through development of science and technology how even minute details were thought of by God.

Yes there are many religions and some claim to better than others but how can anyone look at the world and think it all became how it is today by a mere 'accident' and 'survival of the fittest?!

I'll try to ramble less than some or the other answers. Yes, you would think he'd make the effort to at least send a couple of angels out to meet and greet now and then. They used to show up all the time, according to the old testament. What happened? They can't all have run of with mortal women.

If there is a god, I'm guessing he only wants the poorly educated who can't think for themselves up there with him. But from which religion....

There is no heaven, there is no god, there is no 'higher self' and many people are just fooling themselves.

2 years ago i died (for a minute or so during an operation for cancer that went a bit wrong) and there was no white light, there was no pearly gates, or angels, or life flashbacks.
There was nothing, pure nothing just like being asleep.

Of course i didn't stay dead, i'm here living, breathing and i'm 100% sure there is nothing there when you die.

How much time have all these people above spent 'dead' to tell me i'm wrong?

I died, i have seen the other side, and there's nothing there but darkness.

The word 'religion' is defined in Websters as "a specific system of belief built around a god". I can only answer from the Bible's perspective. The Bible tells the story of creation, the history of mankind and why the world is so confusing today. When God created the first human pair, there was ONE religion..one 'system of belief' on earth. Adam and Eve were taught by the creator what was right and wrong, and everything should have remained beautiful, but they CHOSE a selfish course...independence from God...
This was the start of 'OTHER religions'.
Since it's 'built-in' to man to worship , every civilization on earth, that has ever existed, worships SOMETHING, whether it's an idol or money or luck or the stars or themselves, whatever they set up to look to for direction (Philippians 3:19). Religion, or a 'system of worship' has been devised by every nation on earth, but most not in accord with the CREATOR's will (Romans 1:24&25)). The lives of faithful men and women, who sought out God's will, have been written in the Bible as an example for us (Romans 15:4, Genesis 6:9). Jesus taught that only those "DOING" God's will would be approved by God, (Matthew 7:21-23),so finding the 'TRUTH' that will TELL us what God's will is, is a definite possibility, IF we are willing to search (Acts 17:24-27). The one true religion is and always has been available, but one must REALLY want it enough to put forth a concerted effort to find it.(Matthew 11:25). All the religions that you see today have come from people attempting to fill their spiritual need with something OTHER than the creator's laws. The Bible explains it this way: "...For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God; but not according to accurate knowledge; for, because of not knowing the righteousness of God but seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. "(Romans 10:2&3)
As time has gone on, divisions have occured when church members have disagreed with a teaching, and they leave to establish their own system, more in keeping with what they feel is truth.
Here's an illustration...you buy a new tv from a store. With it comes the manual. Right off the bat, the dealer tells you that you must follow the guidelines in the manual, or your warrenty will become void. You CHOOSE to take the back off the tv and make some private adjustments to your liking. You are so intrigued by your own ideas that YOU write ANOTHER manual, different from the original, and distribute it to everyone you can. Someone else reads YOUR manual and decides THEY can do better, and writes their OWN manual..etc etc...Finally, when the tvs all start having problems, people take them back to the dealer and complain, but because they did not follow directions, but did their own adjustments, the dealer will not fix them.
This is what's happened with religion..people want to follow their own ideas (2 Timothy 4:3&4) The various religions in the world ARE contradictions, but the Bible teaches only ONE way to worship God, and EVERYONE following that form of worship will agree worldwide on how to worship God (1Corinthians 1:10).
According to the Bible, there IS only one true religion.(Matthew 7:13&14)

One Creator, Provider, Sustainer for universes, and for every living things in/on universes.
One Religion. That is to worship One True God Almighty, and obay His Commands. Submitting our will to the Will of Almighty God. All Holy Prophet preached and taught same to worship One True God without partner.Prophet Adam was worshiping One True God,

This is the line of succession of prophethood from Abraham to our times:

The Prophet Abraham (Avraham, or Ibrahim) has rejected idolatry of his tribe and proclaimed the One and Only God.

Moses (Moshe, or Musa) gave the People of Israel the Ten Commandments.

The Prophet Jesus took the teachings of the Hebrew Prophets and made them available to the Gentiles.

The Prophet Muhammad reaffirmed the teachings of the Hebrew Prophets and Jesus, reaffirmed the Oneness of God, rejected idolatry and hypocrisy, and established laws for his time and for future generations for the whole of Mankind.

Literal Meaning of the Word "God"
The Hebrew word translated as "God" is "Elohim", which is the plural of the word "eloah" - "god". The use of the plural in this case has the effect of magnifying the basic root meaning of the word to suggest superior greatness - "god of gods", or the "greatest god".

In most European languages "God, the Creator" is distinguished from "god, an object of worship" by capitalization of the initial letter. In European translations of the Bible "God" is the translation of the Hebrew "Elohim". In Arabic translations of the Bible "Elohim" is translated as "Allah".

The word "Allah" is the Arabic equivalent to the Hebrew word "Elohim". It has the same root "Alef-Lam-Ha" and is the grammatical form of superiority - "god" is "ilah", "God" is "Allah". Contrary to the common misconception among European, American and Australian Christians the word "Allah" is not the name of some special "Muslim Deity". It is just the Arabic word for God, and it is used as such not only by Muslims, but by Arabic speaking Jews and Christians, and it was used in that way long before the emergence of Islam.

Peace :)

Yes, there are contradictions galore in so-called holy books. I was a preacher's grandson, so I had the Bible shoved down my throat daily. I began to see errors in it by age 7.To try to be fair to it, I took Bible History in college, and our textbook admittted there were errors in the Bible. In Philosophy, I studied world religions, so I am familiar with Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Taoism, Shintoism, etc. All of them have contradictions and scientific errors, so none are true, obviously. I have seen apologists feebly try to explain these errors in their religions, but this becomes so absurd that it is obvious they are trying to do anything to maintain beliefs formed prematurely. Wanting to believe anything blinds a man to the truth.

Religion is only one, Jaiva Dharma, the religion of the Soul.
The first think we have to study and realise is that we are spiritual soul, not matter, not this body... we will not be fertilising after death, our body will be, but not the soul.
The soul is eternal, never borns or dies and it can be free from the cycle of imprisonment of being inside a body that born, get old and die by self realisation of the soul.
To consider oneself Cristians, Hindu, Muslin, Mormon, etc are just ignorance, as those things are just names for our material body.
