how do i change which side a window minimizes on the task bar?

All windows minimize to the left side of the taskbar. Some programs will minimize to the Notification Area (which is the separate right portion of the taskbar).

This is usually set within the program itself as an option to minimize to the notification area (which used to be called the System Tray).
