Did you guys know its LEGAL for someone who is 18 years or older to open carry a weapon without a permit. www.opencarry.com . I understand you don't want to believe it or think you know everything but it is perfectly legal cops in VA say its ok (i have asked personally) you can legally go around and carry a shotgun on your back and pack a pistol on your belt at the age of 18. Please dont just answer and tell me im wrong because ill thumbs you down for being wrong and providing false information on a topic. Weather you like it or not its the law take it up with your congressman if you live in VA and dont like it. State laws are allowed to make laws that the fed government says is illega. CA legal to use pot for medicinal purposes but illegal from the federal governement. No state or local cops will bust someone with a "caregiver" card but FBI or DEA can go in and arrest any of them. Know the laws.

Yep. I went around with a shortened(but not SBS) 12 gauge single shot wedged in between my passenger seat and center console, and it saved my life once. I got cut off by a bad driver making a left turn through my lane, and when I pulled off the road, her 'gangsta' boyfriend gets out of her SUV and pulls a knife. I pull a shotgun. He was a smart enough kid he turned around and got back in. I don't even remember if it was loaded or not. This is how carry laws should be, I believe. 'Good' people should have guns, 'bad' people should not.

overanxious_neurotic: Congratulations! You either must live in a nice neighborhood or utopia where violent crime doesn't exist, or just won't see it happening until something happens to you or someone you love. If the later is true, just remember, it might take the rest of your life before anyone responds to your 9-1-1 call or fancy alarm system. Most handgun bullets or shotguns rounds will respond in less than 1/10th of a second.

As far as the pot thing goes, there have been cases years ago where there were issued lifetime prescriptions for marijuana for people with serious diseases. The government allowed a few people, and supplied for them, as well, to see how marijuana affected people with chronic diseases(no pun intended, I swear!). Some of them died soon after, as they would have anyway, and some of them lived far longer and more comfortable lives because of the relaxing effect the marijuana had on their body.

Actually in quite a few states, there is no prohibition about open carry of a firearm. The problem is that state law is often exceeded by local city, county laws. Those trump general state law. For instance, usually State Parks prohibit firearms.

All these prohibitions are causing people who have carry permits some fits, because theoretically, they are licensed to carry anywhere (except where prohibited). Going from one jurisdiction into another is what causes them fits. What's legal here may be illegal 500 feet from here.

Colleges should be open to citizens and LEGAL immigrants only. However if you aren't smart enough to get accepted then you shouldn't be there either. How many of those 36% were rejected for being illegal immigrants and how many were just not smart enough? I really doubt that they were all qualified but lost a spot to an illegal immigrant. I applied to 2 colleges and was accepted to both. I didnt bother applying to several more because I knew my grades were borderline and even if I did get in I would probably not get many scholarships due to my grades being below their standards.

Did some checking and VA is an open carry state. Just be sure that you or anyone else you know doesn't abuse that privilege. There are many out there that are just waiting for someone to screw up so that can get that law taken off the books.

I have never felt the need to own a gun or keep one on my person (and I live in the downtown of a large city).

It makes me wonder about those who do.

And I agree that state and federal laws should be consistent. If not, the judge should dismiss any cases arising from the conflicting laws.

Next poster: I live in a average neighborhood in an area that has all the problems associated with big cities. There are some dodgy areas with gangs and drugs not far away. I do not have an expensive alarm system I just take the usually precautions of locking up with a deadbolt. I have also lived near NYC for a while. I know of nobody who has stopped a crime with a gum, bit I do know someone who used a gun in the middle of a domestic fight; Dad's now doing life. Mom's in the cemetery, and two kids are traumatized, maybe for life.
