Depends on what type of fishing you are doing.

If you are ONLY offshore hauling in 100+ LB fish then a conventional would be more durable and "strong".

However, if you are jetty fishing or inshore saltwater fishing using a decent spinning outfit would be just as durable as a conventional.

If you only use conventional then you sacrifice casting distance and versatility.

But, if you need "brute strength" then conventional is the way to go.

by conventional I'm assuming you mean a closed face reel not a baitcaster. I would say a spinning reel but it all depends on the brand, size and how you take care of it
